This site has been on my wish list for a long while and next year we are thinking of going. I wondered if anyone else has done this trip from Leicestershire (Market Harborough)? Any recommendations for route, stop overs etc. would be much appreciated. We have a two week window the beginning of next July '15.

hi we done rosemarkie this year traveling from sunderland , we stopped off in fife for 1 night using drumcarro farm ,we have used hattonburn nursery in Perthshire , this site is next to the M90. the route we used was A68 to Edinburgh then M90 to perth then A9 to inverness, hope this helps

NO, PROBS. if you are using the A1 past the metro centre ,that is the part from the ANGEL of the north to the A69 turn off , as of last weekend 40 m.p.h. in both directions and closed over night this is so they can make it 3 lanes ,its going to take up to 2016 to finish , its a road I will be avoiding . if I am going that way I will be using the A19 tyne tunnel then back onto A1.

Check out Directions on Bing maps - it's a 500 miles trip for you (and there are 2 sites at Rosemarkie, Fortrose and Rosemarkie, almost adjacent), which for us (allowing comfort breaks) would be a good 13 hours / 2 day drive. Nothing wrong with Drumcarro, but you're going well out of your way to go to St Andrews en route to Inverness. I'd come up the west side, as it's M-way or dual carriageway most of the way, making for a smoother faster trip - Moffat is a popular stop-over on the M74 and about half way if you want to make it up in 2 days and maximise your time up north. If it's fully booked, nearby Hoddom Castle is a good alternative. Moffat is walking distance from a choice of pubs, Hoddom has an on-site eatery, meaning you can arrive later as you don't need to cook.

Talk about planning ahead!!
I'm with Fiona regarding the West route. A1, across A66 to the M6, M74, round Glasgow and then the A9 to Inverness.

There are opportunities for a stop round Gretna (or Gretna Green) or further on at Moffat.

Hi Fiona & Capt Lightning. Yes, the west route would be the way to go for us. It's still only a pipe dream as we have big family commitments at the moment due to unfortunate circumstances (fate decided to deal out a duff hand). Next year we thought we might be able to branch out a bit on our own so started to dream. Thank you so much for your replies.

Altho' not towing and adoring the A68, I'd agree with Fiona and Capt.Lightning - westabout better.

Couple of things to remember - Scots schools break up at end of June and they'll be starting work on the dualling of parts of the A9 (I have heard that it's the Kingcraig section) so worth keeping tabs on that nearer the time as there's potential for delays.

Don't let roadworks put you off coming north, Rusty. My local (and dangerous) A77 was replaced by a parallel M-way, with surprisingly little hassle. But if you'd asked 100 of us where to stay up north, you'd get 100 suggestions so I'm curious about what made you choose Rosemarkie! We may be able to suggest other places to overnight on route with more of the same for you to enjoy and make the most of your trip.

Hi, sorry not to have replied sooner Fiona, been a bit busy. Very good question, why Rosemarkie? In an ideal time we would be touring Scotland for a few months in a camper. People dream of taking off & touring Europe when they retire, ours has always been Scotland. We have visited twice before, briefly, & vowed we'd return, I think that realistically we'd be better to set our sights on an area just over the border, that way we'd have more time to enjoy our visit. We are open to any recommendations. Thank you ficklejade for the heads up on Scottish school holidays too. When I have more time I'll explore the the southern counties & when I've got a better idea I'll let you know. Again, thank you all for your helpful replies.

We're at the C&CC site as I write this having travelled up from Sheffield with a caravan in tow. We stopped at the Dunbar club site for a couple of nights en-route. Sheffield to Dunbar with a half hour lunch stop at Durham services took 4.5 hours. Dunbar to Rosemarkie with a similar stop took 5 hours. We came up the A1 all the way and the roadworks near Newcastle didn't delay us much.

I guess that Market H is about 2 hours from Sheffield on the M1 so that may be an option.

Towing to both sites is easy with no lengthy narrow spots. Though the final approach to Dunbar is single track there are a large amount of passing places and you can see a long way ahead.

Rosemarkie is hardly "just over the border", Rusty - more like 5-6 hours drive north of the border. But the grand tour is a grand idea - lots of other threads with good ideas. Let us all know how you get on!

PS an alternative to Moffat or Hoddom Castle for a stop-over en route would be Witches Craig, at Blairlogie (it's just outside Stirling, but putting Stirling into the campsite search won't bring it up). That way, if you wished, you could stay a day or two and take in Stirling Castle (free if you're in English Heritage, and one of my favourites), and The Falkirk Wheel (an engineering feat where 2 canals meet at two levels) and the Kelpies (huge beautiful sculptures of two Clydesdale horses' heads) in Helix Park, also at Falkirk (further along on one of the two canals).

Thanks gould300, that is another alternative. Have been up to Dunstan Hill so think that would be our limit for first leg. Hope you're having a good time at Rosemarkie, have serious envy! Hi Fiona, had a chuckle, have been up to Resipole, Ardnamurchan in the past. Those were the camper van days. We stopped off at Carlisle and Bunree that time. Have a fair idea of the distance involved for Rosemarkie, hence still on the wish list. Think it might be better not to be too adventurous with a caravan in tow this time, also we are tied to two weeks and don't want to rush. Falkirk wheel, Kelpies and castle are a must see too (hubby worked on wheel before it opened so knows it well, but I don't!). Thanks again for all your input, such a wonderful choice of places to see in Scotland, you are very lucky but guess you already know that!

We stopped at Rosemarie in April,did three nights as part of an eleven day tour. Travelling from Doncaster,we had one night at Troutbeck via A1 and A66. Two nights at Scone, nice site with really modern and super clean facilities. Up the A9 to Rosemarie(my absolute favourite site). Across Scotland on A82 to Millarochy bay for two nights(Beware this road if you have any fillings as it is the most pot holed cart track I have ever used !) Then on to Kendal for our last two nights.
All sites are camping and caravan club as we are in our first season of motorhoming and you know exactly what you are going to get with them.Rosemarkie was chosen because we have a friend living in that area and all the others as stepping stones to get there and back.We will definitely return to Rosemarkie,hopefully for a longer stay next time.
