We always use the Corwen Road A494, through Bala and past Dolgellau then follow signs for Barmouth. No drops!
------------- Wish I could go camping more and not have to work for a living!!!

If you are coming from Ruthin, you will join the A494 Corwen Road. Believe me, I know what you mean about drops. I tried to drive to Lake Vyrnwy from Bala and had to turn back because of the drop

Sue,
We live in Cheshire and travel regularly to the in-laws in Dolgellau, and this is the route we use, admittedly without the van, but makes no difference ... no serious hills, no big drops, and no narrower than any other possible routes ...
• A55 to J36 Warren Interchange (sp Pen-Y-Fford),
• A5104 to RaB,
• First exit onto A550 (sp Wrexham/Corwen),
• Next RaB, third exit onto A5104 (sp Corwen),
• At Bridge Inn, Pontblyddyn, go left then right onto A5104,
• After crossing moors(easy!)reach A525 at Crown Hotel, Llandegla,
• (Big layby at this junction if you need a stop),
• Go right, then left onto A5104 (sp Corwen),
• Over RaB (sp Corwen),
• Turn right at A5 traffic lights near Corwen (sp Bala),
• (Rhug Estate cafe, another possible stopping place),
• At Druids Corner, turn left onto A494 (sp Bala),
• Follow A494 to Bala, and past Bala Lake,
• At Dolgellau Bypass, turn right onto A470 (sp Porthmadog)
• At Llanelltydd take first left on RaB onto A496 (sp Barmouth)
• (Now it gets a bit twisty),
• Follow A496 into and through Barmouth.
If you want to you could leave the Chester bypass onto the A483 Wrexham bypass (easy), and take the A525 through Coedpoeth and Bwlchgwyn (not as easy) to reach the Crown Hotel at Llandegla as above.
Allow plenty of time and good luck,
John.

>>Is it ok Ruthin to Corwen?
Yes, just don't go to the top of town in Ruthin, its narrow past the castle entrance. Go around Ruthin following the signs for "Through Traffic" and then Bala.
