Hello, i'm new to UK Campsite - but have been camping for most of my life (now 56) I'd like to camp in this October half term, with bikes.... (also with 8 yr old twin girls) Ideally near the seaside

Can anyone recommend a campsite near traffic free cycle paths? Looking south of UK rather than north at that time of year, but will consider anything.

Thanks in advance

Have you checked the Sustrans website? http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ Or www.cycle-route.com Not for you now (too far), but I know the coast of Argyll has a cycle path along much of the way, several campsites nearby - I've seen it going in over the past few years, too new for my OS map. If it's on-road, the road is very quiet. And not by the sea, but the Seven Stanes is a chain of mountain biking centres in the forests of South Scotland from Galloway to the Borders, and they have runs suitable for youngsters, plenty of sites in the vicinity though not next door. And if you're up our way, Whitelee windfarm, south of Glasgow, has 200km of well-surfaced track winding around the 200 or so turbines, with showering facilities for bikers, and great views west to Arran, north to Ben Lomond and south to the Galloway hills.

Nowhere near the sea but if you are a member of the C&CC their Club site in Milton Keynes connects with our extensive traffic free cycle routes all across the city. Its also next door to Gulliver's World if you want a change from cycling.

Dennis Cove in Padstow leads directly onto the Camel Trail and is only a short half mile form Padstow itself.

There are several campsites near to the Tarka Trail in North Devon including Tarka Holiday Park or Bay View Campsite which is a short drive from the start of the trail in Braunton. Great beaches nearby as well.

Have you thought about camping near a canal. Cycling is allowed on the towpaths and you can travel for miles from village to village. The Kennet and Avon canal is lovely.

Not near the seaside but Delamere Forest site has direct access to miles of forest trails and not far from you.

I have a book called "traffic free cycle paths" got it from Amazon, about 14.00 cant tell you the author at present time as sitting in a bar in south of france but it gives all the paths in the UK, we have used it loads of times. We stayed at a c&cc cs site at The Runt in Tun pub its right next to the trail that runs down to Eastbourne, also Smytham manor campsite is right on the Tarka trail. Also the C&CC club site at Devizes is great and right next to the canal. hope this helps. J x

Thanks Everyone for the replies... Dennis Cove certainly sounds like a favoured option... I investigated... and the only problem is it closes at the end of Sept!! Grrrr!!

Some really helpful comments from you all. I'll report back on where we end up.

Thanks, Johnny

The Camel trail runs through Wadebridge to Padstow. Several sites on or near it.

Or the Tarka goes from Braunton through Barnstaple and Bideford before turning slightly inland. Again there are several sites close by. Smytham Manor in great Torrington has direct access.
