The gardens are beautiful whatever time of year. We used The Meadows (see review) on the St Austell-Pentewan road, if you are energetic you can walk to Heligan from there. Otherwise there is a regular bus. If you go by bus the admission price to Heligan is reduced.
Don't forget, dogs on leads allowed in too!
Could you put a review onto the site's entry, Bluebell? I won't find this thread if I come down next year - saw the gardens a long time ago, well worth visiting indeed.

We visited the Lost Gardens of Heligan in July when we stayed at Little Winnick campsite. The gardens were a half hour walk away and we got a discount on admission because we had walked. Very impressed with the gardens and would definately visit again.
Tregarton Park is worth looking at - just down the road from Heligan, with a swimming pool and superb facilities.
Excellent prices too - especially outside the school holidays.
