We've done it twice, when hard standing was the only thing available, due to the winter closure of the (grass) tent field.
In all honesty, at the time, it went well, and we quite liked it... but after returning, it was apparent that the stones had done more harm than good to the separate footprint groundsheet. Luckily, the SIG of the actual tent survived intact.
With hindsight, coupled with a few stories since read on here, and words of wisdom from certain folk on here, I seriously doubt I'd ever pitch a tent on hard standing again. Doesn't seem worth the risk, imo.
I guess you could argue that certain surfaces are better than others, but it's a no from me, from now on.
