The C&CC's National Feast of lanterns is being held in Norfolk next year and I fancied going. As I would be motorcycle camping I would be unable to take my own "facilities" and therefore emailed the club to find out what was being provided.

I was informed that there would be showers, and toilets in the main arena but nowhere else. When I replied why couldn't portable washroom/toilets be sited in the camping areas, I received no reply. I camp at many bike rallies where these facilities are provided, so logistically why not at the NFOL?

I was informed that I may be able to pitch with the Association of Lightweight Campers if my tent was small enough, but where does this leave family campers?

Have you camped at previous NFOL's and how did you get on? The booking form in this months magazine says "own San ess" so unless you are in a caravan or motorhome I would guess with some difficulty!

Yes tented with NFOL,  and yes  " Own San Ess "   Families  that go already have what they need.  Families that want to go  "Pardon the pun"  will be able to get all the info required from here,  from bumper dumper to Porta potty  and own shower set up, usually involves a poundland paddling pool  24

Mmmm.......sounds a bit too much like roughing it for my liking. When I was younger camping was all about beer and bands. Now I've turned 50 it seems more about toilets and showers!

I have got the impression that the NFOL is primarily a DA get-together for those that would have the facilities anyway, as opposed to the camper that tends to use it's club sites more.

Oh well, I'll have to wait till I've succumbed to the lure of the "van" to appreciate its charms...

Yet another sign that the C&CC, formerly the Camping Club of Great Britain & Ireland, is now biased towards caravans.

I wouldn't say that, but I would agree that campers have changed.  Gone are the days of self reliance, now it's heated toilets.  Which to be fair is not possible on a rally field.  If they did supply full facilities then the likes of me couldn't afford to go  24

So let them that want full facilities and laid on entertainment pay for it.  For the rest of us all the joys of NFOL with a porta potti  24

I thought that there was entertainment at the NFOL?

I just find it surprising that the club makes such a fuss over the quality of its washrooms, at its club sites (loo of the year awards etc), pays so little attention to them at its flagship event.

I can't believe that the resources of the C&CC can't stretch to providing temporary facilities for those that need them. That way it makes it a more inclusive event.

There is entertainment, and plenty of it,  good company, and limited facilities for lightweight campers.

Google for Bog In A Bag. We used one o these when we started camping (have a caravan now though) and it came in very handy when you're the other side of a field from the toilets and it was pouring it down at 2am or there weren't any.

I think I will email the Association of Lightweight Campers and see what provisions they lay on for themselves or have laid on for them. May be worth their membership fee if it enables us to go. Thanks for the replies.
