A long way from Essex..... but you did ask. Walking distance (but not necessarily a pitching iron away) - Kirk Loch (Dumfriesshire) is next door to Lochmaben GC (designer James Braid); Belhaven is walkable from Winterfield GC in Dunbar (E Lothian. Dunbar GC is a very posh course in the town centre.); Sandyhills (Dumfriesshire) for next door Colvend GC with a very long par 5; Braidhaugh at Crieff (Highland Perthshire) would be a bit of a trek but there are 3 good courses on the top side of town; Machrihanish site at south Kintyre (Machrihanish GC is the one where the first tee requires a good shot "over the ocean" i.e. across the beach to the fairway - watching folk tee off at high tide is good entertainment); Dornoch town way up north has several sites and several truly excellent GCs; similarly, several sites in Pitlochry and a cracking GC there - first 3 holes all uphill, no sit-on buggies to hire; Sauchope Links at Crail (Fife) is on the site of the first Crail GC before it moved down the coast a bit; Moffat C&CC site is a bit of a hike but Moffat GC is great for views of the Southern Uplands; Brighouse Bay site near Kirkcudbright has its own small GC on site; Carradale site (on a glorious Kintyre beach) is not far from Carradale GC - only 9 holes but wow! the views of Arran are tremendous; several sites at Portpatrick (far SW Scotland) and several GCs too with views to Ireland; Blair Castle isn't far from a nice GC and next door to Blair Castle itself; Hoddom Castle site has its own enjoyable flat GC; the site at Ullapool (far far from Essex) is not far from the GC there; Kippford holiday park is across the road from the quirkiest 9-hole course I know, with stunning views, and a short walk from the prettiest firth in Dumfries & Galloway with a good pub and bobbing yachts. Come wild camping to my local Isle of Arran where there are 7 very different golf courses (Lamlash and Lochranza each have a site and a GC). So - a long list, but a long trip north to Scotland - yes, we have camped often in England but haven't found a site near a golf course so I'll be interested to read other recommendations.
Ferry Meadows at Peterborough has two courses next door and there is a 9 hole course inside the racecourse at Market Rasen with the Caravan Club site alongside.

Will be in Scotland hopefully again this year and give them courses a go thanks again
Juan and Mike thanks for info, have play ferry meadows very nice course, hopefully will try Market Rasen on way up to Scotland. Incleboro one for the list thanks..
There are 2 in Cambridge worth try as well Stroud Park CC golf next door and Bourne cc golf..
If you're in Aberdeenshire, Royal Tarlair Golf Club at Macduff or Royal Duff House golf course are not far from Banff Links caravan site. Fraserburgh Golf course is near The camp site in town (and beside a great beach) and Turriff golf course is a short drive (pun) from the town camp site.
Cruden Bay has a world top 100 listed links course and has "free" camping on the nearby harbour (donation appreciated) or a CL nearby. There is a campsite but I wouldn't recommend it.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
We stayed at a campsite in Abergele N Wales Manorofan Farm which had a golf course right by it. In fact some people staying in the caravans down the bottom end complained of being woken up early in the morning by the golfers teeing off.

High straggleton farm or sandfield house, both near the coast at whitby are just across the road from a golf course.
Also centenary way, near the coast at Filey has a golf course just at the end of a close footpath.
Don't play myself so don't know if either are any good but both are in great locations.
Grange Park Messingham, North Lincolnshire. Approx a 15 pitch site with EHU. Fishing, tennis and a 18 hole golf course with licensed club house and across the road is a driving range and par 3 9 hole course. I think it is £14 a night.
