Hi all,
We are looking at a trip up to the Galloway forest area sometime around April. We are a family of four (2 adults and 2 small children) So we are not looking for anything to full on and noisy. A nice relaxed site with clean facilities and a village nearby would do nicely. Not too far from the Forest park.
Any suggestions would be great, cheers.

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Balloch o dee is one I've always fancied, auchenlerie is great though is a static site. The one just before it Moss somthing is great too. I didn't like Loch ken tbh. Showers are extra and you need to chase the warden for tokens. Also very isolated.

Nice drive through the forest on Raiders Road, goes from A712 for 10 miles and follows the river Dee.
We stayed at New England Bay CC site which is further away from the forest, very good but a bit isolated.
Not a site recommendation but...have you ever tried Cream o' Galloway for a family day out.
It's a few years since we were there so hopefully it's still in existence as it was a great place for children. The ice cream was lovely and the adventure playground-y area was excellent. Look out for it!
Could try Kippford holiday park, Tho they might have reduced touring pitches!!
2nd vote for Cream O Galloway,
its a wee bit pricey tho! But what isn't...
Also Chocolate factory at Twynholm,
a good day out with kids..
http://scotland.forestry.gov.uk/forest-parks/galloway-forest-park is a good starter for ideas. Interactive map at http://www.gallowayforestpark.com/map-c26.html Galloway is Scotland's first Dark Sky Park with an Observatory in East Ayrshire at Craigengillan outside Dalmellington(site not far at Loch Doon, too new for UKCS map). I don't think there are any sites in the Park as such but if you put "Newton Stewart" into the town name of the UKCS search, you'll come up with plenty of names of sites near the park. We've happily stayed at Dunroamin, a smashing site between Newton Stewart and Garlieston (where there's a C&CC CS and a CC members only site).
Moss Yard yes!
Cream of galloway isn't too bad really, they have bouncy nets now which are worth it for the entry alone, great walking too and a great veiwpoint from the top of the adventure tower. I take my daughter to the chocolate factory often, more for kids and at £14 for the kids class isn't cheap but entry to the play areas and food are reasonable.
Another vote here for Cream o'Galloway. We didn't go into the adventure park as we had our dog but we still had a great day pond dipping walking and making our own ice cream sundaes. The staff were lovely.
