Okay so we have bought the tent and electric hook up and all the gear and want to book a campsite for first May bank holiday weekend. Somewhere not to far from us in Surrey so probably Sussex way closer to the sea. The thing is I don't want to scare my husband off camping (as he is resisting) by taking him somewhere that isn't nice or that is too hard work. Ideally I would like somewhere with lots of space for the kids to play and make friends and climb trees but that also has a pub or shop close by and either has fire pits or electric hook up as we can't afford to eat out every night. Also our tent is a large one I think 7metres so need the slightly bigger campsites. Any suggestions greatly appreciated, as I really want our first trip to go well and then I can see us becoming avid campers (if I have anything to do with it!) btw taking 3 kids with us 8yrs, 6yrs and 4 yrs.

Yes, check the descriptions and reviews of some of these sites.

Looks as if only one allows open fires though, and I doubt if any would encourage tree climbing!

What about the New forest or Dorset where the beaches are nicer than Sussex and Hants. Worth travelling a litte further.

Birchwood Tourist Park in near Wareham, Dorset, my favourite camp site, ticks a lot of the boxes.

However, it does not allow camp fire, and the maximum size of tents on any pitch 4.6 metres wide (15ft) and 6.7 metres (22ft) long. Therefore, a 7m tent may need to go on two pitches, bumping up the cost considerably.

It is worth checking and confirming the size of the tent, and ring them up and enquire if it needs to go on two pitches.

You need to hurry up and book. It's bank holiday and sites get booked up well in advance. Will also be peak prices at that time. You may need to look inland a bit as the ones near the coast could be full. Just ring round a few you fancy to see if they can fit you in.

Corfe Castle? There's a very child-friendly site with some EHU pitches, walking distance of three or four pubs, shop on site, others a short drive away. Fires policy - "No open fires
without express prior permission from the owners; flames and sparks are an extreme fire hazard. Barbeques are
permitted but burning receptacles must not be directly in contact with the ground"

I agree with the others, can defo recommend the Purbecks in Dorset as an area. Loads of sites and lovely countryside and beaches.
