Hi All
Our annual holiday to IOW in July/Aug...We are travelling at a different time (7.15am fri) this year..and rather than get up early we have decided to get going on Thurs night after work etc...now that could mean arriving on site late..before in years gone by we have stopped at lay by en route...is this possible now ? ..do service stations let you stop ?or does anyone know of anything suitable for 2 caravans.?

You can usually stop on Service Stations but at a cost, often more than a campsite. There is a handy one on the M27 just before the exit for Southampton Docks. A Google will come up with contact details to confirm you can stay overnight.

Some sites have a gate that's locked overnight until a reasonable time in the morning, and that wouldn't suit you leaving for your (very early!!) ferry. There's a website http://motorwayservicesonline.co.uk/Parking  with advice about service stations that allow overnighting (most do), may cost about £20, but you can use the on-site catering and leave when you want. You can stop in a lay-by unless there's a specific sign prohibiting it, but you'd want one off the road or you'll be rocked & buffeted by every passing lorry and get no sleep at all.

2024 = 20 sites / 41 nights. 2023 = 9/23. 2022 = 13/35. 2021 = 11/29. 2020 = 4/20. 2019 = 13/35. 2018 = 20/33. 2017 = 10/22. 2016 = 19/33. 2015 = 15 sites / 27 nights. Didn't count 1976 to 2014.

Try Sunnydale Farm CS at Southampton

We stayed there once before and no problems with being up and away very early

You could try Sutton Scotney Services on the A34 at Sutton Scotney...about half an hours drive into Southampton.

Basingstoke canal centre;http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=4113

On M3 allow you to arrive any time, they put your welcome pack in padlocked box, we have used them at all unusual times of an evening as a stopover to get the M25 out of the way and then onwards the next morning to West country, they have a café for breakfast in the morning and showers.
