I think if I was returning to the Hebrides for just one week, I would go and stay on the Island of Barra.
Barra is the Outer Hebrides in miniature.
Totally agree. We only spent a couple of nights there at the start of our trip and even though the weather was awful, loved it. If I did the same trip again I'd start on Lewis and finish in Barra instead of the other way around.
The Road Equivalent Tariff RET has made ferry tickets a bit more affordable. I think only Mull, Coll & Tiree are the "old" price, until later this year. Arran used to be over £70 for the car, now it's less than £30.
If it's any help to others reading this thread as well as the OP, RET will ONLY come in on the following routes from October 2015:
Wemyss Bay/Rothesay
Colintraive/Rhubodach
Mallaig/Muck/Eigg/Rum
Castlebay/Lochboisdale
Barra/Eriskay
Bernaray/Leverburgh
Tarbet/Lochmaddy
Mallaig/Armadale/
Largs/Cumbrae
Oban/Lismore
Tarbert/Portavadie
This will mean major savings on some routes, considerably less on others (in Mull's case, our most reliable ferry over the winter months - Lochaline/Fishnish - receives less than half the discount the Oban crossing shows when RET comes in). Passenger fares for those over 60 resident on island will go up, not down. I appreciate this will matter not to the visitors, but all of us are so convinced about the benefits of RET on what are lifeline services!! :-)

In that case I will leave my planned jaunt to Lismore until after Oct 15.
Afterall I was only going there to look up the birthplace of an ancestor, born in Achnacroish in 1757, so I'm sure he can wait another year before I visit there!
Hi Rod & Ali,
We have booked to go to the outer Hebrides at the end of August, but slightly different to yourselves for different reasons we are sailing via Skye on to North uist and then later on through south uist and onto Barra and return the same way, ferry cost alone is around £500 (6 Sailings)
If you do go let us know how you went on and show us plenty of pictures.
Also what the roads are like for caravan towing.
Has anyone had dealings with the Eriskay to Ardmhor ferrywith a caravan and if so what is access like.

Fiona, re the new Arran prices - are they low season prices or all-year?

Thanks ficklejade. You beat me to it with the CalMac link. Thanks also for the list of the last remaining RETs to come in, many of which are Firth of Clyde and therefore local to me. As I understand it, there will be no RET for the mainland-to-mainland links across the Clyde, though this is only relevant to the OP if they want to cross over to Dunoon, thence to Portavadie and that way to the west coast - but that road round the head of Loch Striven is not good with a caravan.
As well is two words!
