Hello,

I'm planning a trip for my self and my daughter (11) for the end of August, despite living in the North East of England I've only ever really been to Edinburgh.

This is what I've come up with so far

First stop Kirkudbright Solway View

not sure if we should include a visit to Glasgow or just head straight to Androssan and over to Arran Seal Shore Camping

From Arran I'm thinking we'll get the ferry back to the mainland from Lochranza and then drive up to Airsaig where we'll get a ferry over to Eigg.

Maybe staying somewhere on the way.

We won't be camping on Eigg as its a foot passenger ferry only.

After Eigg we'll be heading back in the direction of Edinburgh Glen Nevis and with a possible (real bed) overnight in Stirling.

So any suggestions on my general route, campsites, things to see and do etc would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, we're probably thinking around 20 days.

Get the ferry from Lochranza on Arran over to Claonaig. Then drive North through Tarbert and on to Oban, Fort William and on to Arisaig.
If you wish to see the West Coast then this IS it.
The rest is just a pale imitation.
No disrespect intended but give Glasgow a miss.

Best wishes.

Eigg has a campsite altho' appreciate you might not wish to lug all the gear as foot passengers.

rhj's suggestion of going over to Claonaig is much better - have a look at the Calmac website

Ah yes that's what I meant when I said the ferry from Lochranza Rhj296, I just couldn't remember the name of the Kintyre port. Any suggestions of campsites between Claonaig and Arisaig?

I don't think I could actually manage to carry the stuff for us to camp on Eigg ficklejade! I'm hoping once I figure out dates I will be able to make a reservation for the bothy on the campsite though.

If you want to camp in Arisaig itself then try Invercaimbe camp site, it's right by the beach with views to die for.

Linwater is one of my regular sites, it is only an hour away from where I live.
When you are there you must go to see the Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies, only about 18 miles away.
A 10 minute walk through the woods from Linwater takes you to the Lin's Mill aqueduct where you can watch the canal boats crossing the River Almond.

About 2 miles from the site is a Crowne Carvery where you can get an excellent meal at very cheap price to either eat-in or take back to the site.

Not far from the site is a park & ride where you can get the bus into Edinburgh.

Only ones I've stayed at are Oban Bay and the CCC site north Connel at Barcaldine - well have stayed at North Ledaig when stranded but that was in friends' caravan and don't think they take tents.

Oban Bay is in a nice, quiet location about 2 miles s of Oban on single track road. It has statics and a long, sloping field for tourers with some EHU plus small shop on site. However, felt it was expensive (but there was only me) and at the time no discounts for singletons. Only a short walk from the sound and views over to Kerrera. Take your own food and drink or else be prepared to drive into Oban to eat.

The Oban CCC site is quite a way north out of Oban in a former walled garden with some lovely woodland walks and has a small bar/restaurant. Personally, lovely location but I don't like being hemmed in and can be bad for midges.

If you want to shop in Oban, free parking at Tesco's for two hours (don't stay a second over) or if you're lucky, there's free one adjacent. There's also a Lidl who have taken over the former Co-op store. Whatever you do, whether at Tesco's or street or Council car parks in Oban do not stay over your allotted time - there's a blitz on!

Camusdarach up the road is pretty good too. It doesn't have the views of Invercaimbe but the beach is only 5 minutes walk away and it's more sheltered if it's windy.

Lovely chippie in Mallaig too

I love Resipole on the Ardnamurchan peninsula; the ferry ride across is beautiful!
