I'm planning to do a fair bit more camping this year as we're not going abroad, probably mostly long weekends.

I'm trying to find some campsites that are a bit more "au naturel" than your big sites with only a few metres between you and the tent next door. I don't need extensive amenities although a toilet would be handy.

Somewhere beautiful where I'm not facing another tent, fires allowed and not too many other people. I'm based in Berkshire so a few hours from there would be best.

Any suggestions?

I've heard that the caravan club have a list of smaller sites - anyone used those?

If you are tent camping, it's best to go with the Camping and Caravanning Club, who have small, cheaper sites called Certified Sites (CSs).

We liked Rhydywernen CS at Brecon, I don't think you have to a Club member to use the camping field. It has 2 loos and 2 showers, allows fires, but there is no electricity on this part of the site (there is also an area for caravans and motorhomes, which does have ehu).

It's quite a big field, next an attractive small river. The only let down is the poor quality of the rubbish bin area, and over long grass.

Ewelease Farm?

Farm area open in August on the south coast near Weymouth. Never been there but friends have... like the open fires bit and very relaxed but big site/field. Has its own beach too.

Yeah, try doing a search on this website for campsites that allow campfires. I know it's not exactly what you're looking for, but we've found a strong correlation between sites that allow campfires and a more laid-back, relaxed approach. Often the facilities will be spartan, but you said you don't mind that. For us, as long as there's a tap and some kind of loo, we're happy.
