Hi, off to Clachtoll in July August! We've been to the outer Hebrides in the summer and found them pretty midge free because of the breeze. What's it like in Assynt? Thank you x

I was at Clachtoll last August and didn't see one. Mind you it was windy but talking to regulars on site and they don't seem to have any problems. Brilliant site and area, I would love to go back again.

They are omnipresent in that part of the world. As soon as evening arrives and the wind drops they are out in force. They also find areas down wind and in the lee of large structures like tents vans etc. Best to enjoy the time you are there, live with them and put up with the menace.
I still have the emotional scars from being out on the moor taking home m sister in laws peats.   We were out for three hours or more on the moor on Lewis and were eaten alive. There was nowhere to run to and nowhere to hide. My skin is still creeping as I type this.
My wife has just reminded me of the dance we went to in Lochinver village hall. It was a great night until it got too hot from the dancing so the doors were opened up and that was when everyone inside was eaten alive. You were swallowing them the air was so thick with the creatures.
Still it was a great dance until that moment with the Lochinver Ceilidh Band playing for all they were worth.

We did have a couple of evenings on the camp site with no wind and didn't see any midges. The natural shot grass also helps. I certainly wouldn't worry about midges if you're going to clachtoll, I've had much worse in the Yorkshire Dales and Lakes.

Had a fantastic week there last August usually a gentle sea breeze so enough to keep midges at bay. We were aware kof them sometimes on inland walks but not terrible and not often. It's an amazing campsite with very friendly owners.

Ha ha you make me laugh " a gentle breeze" you must have been the lucky ones, we had 3 days of very strong winds followed by 3 days of fairly strong winds and then a nice still couple of days. Its a great place though I can't wait to go back.
