If you stayed a week the deposit would be the same and it wouldn't seem much. Sites do get let down with no shows. They do need to make money. We have choices. If it's a problem go elsewhere. I personally wouldn't have a problem with it.
book a foreign holiday with Thomas cook etc they want all the money up front. Everyone is happy to do that.

I rarely book far in advance for this reason; I can't afford to tie up too much money in advance. That way I can pay when they need the money. This year I knew we could only afford a deposit for now. I've literally just this week booked our main summer holiday at less than 7 weeks notice, despite the fact I started researching it before New Year. It was £30 per week per pitch as deposit which is just over a quarter of the cost which I thought was fair, although the same deposit correlated to about two thirds of the total cost of my friends booking as she's joining us for a few days but with a smaller family.
I don't understand sites that DON'T take a deposit. Their main bread and butter is now, but with our weather people think twice about cancelling if they'd paid a deposit which is non refundable.
We just booked a holiday and as it was only 2 weeks away asked to pay in full which I had no problem with.
A holiday we have booked in September, is £95, paid £40 deposit and the rest has to be paid by card or cheque 14 days before arrival or cash on arrival, but once the deposit is paid the whole amount is payable unless you have their cancellation plan. I have booked this and had read the terms and conditions, so know what I'm letting myself in for.
People can make up any excuse for not turning up, but it means that site has lost that pitch being used if you don't turn up. They are there to make a living!
Two sites booked for week long stays, both in school summer holidays, neither have required a deposit, only a request that if we decided we can't got to let them know, which I would do anyway.
