Just to warn you we had my daughters bike stolen from Clumber Park campsite (tent site) last night. It was fully secured on a towed bike carrier, locked on in numerous ways and just a foot from our tent. It's removal has also caused damage to our bike trailer

2 other families were also victims last night.

Although this happened on the camping only site at Clumber Park, staff there have since told us that the caravan site there has also been hit recently.

I know this could happen anywhere but an Internet search tells us the caravan site has had a serious problem with this in the past and that Clumber Park (national Trust property) itself has also had problems.

Lovely site if you don't want to take a bike or don't have expensive bikes (seems they are targeting certain ones as they left our other 3 and daughters was the most expensive of them all and brand new).

However even if you don't have bikes be aware that there may be people snooping around your tent while you are sleeping.

That's just creepy, how awful for you. Campsites generally seem such safe, good-natured places. They'll lose business if that carries on! Even though I don't have a bike to nick, I wouldn't want to go to a site where that sort of thing happens. I would just feel uncomfortable.

Not mormaly required but if it makes you feel more comfortable you could buy a 12LED Solar Powered PIR Motion Sensor Security light ( app £10) and point it in the direction of your items of value, the fact that it comes on when anyone snoops around you stuff should put them off and they are not to bright to affect other units.

Reading the thread you put in the caravan section it would seem though that this is a common problem at this site and the caravan club site, and has been for years. Such a shame that scumbags are determined to spoil it for others.

We have stayed at another site in the area and there are signs up at this particular site warning about bike thefts. Seems it is a problem in this area.

Sorry to hear this.
It's one of the reasons we are deliberately and consciously sticking with "the lower end of the market", when it comes to our bikes. Still don't make it right, of course, but maybe a little less painful should they get taken.
We also "rely" on chunky chain, (In addition to 2 x bike locks), and a battery powered "wailing alarm" pad lock!

Less appealing bikes + multiple deterrents hopefully = Scum moving along elsewhere!
Selfish of me, I know, but we all sometimes need to look after number one.*

Still scum though!

I'm not sure but hasn't the Caravan Club installed bike sheds to store bikes in overnight.

Interested to read the staff say the CC has also been hit, as HarryB says above they have locked bike sheds and have had for sometime.

Wonder why the camping site aren't investing in something similar to locked sheds if they have had the problem for a similar amount of time.

Sounds like a steady income for the local scum..wonder if the sites affected are letting customers know there is an issue!

The site were aware we had 4 bikes and did not mention a thing about bike theft. Also there were no signs up. Certainly not between the entrance to the park and the campsite which was the only bit we saw on arrival on the Friday night.
They came to us on the Saturday morning saying there had been an incident and did we want to lock our bikes in the 'house' for Saturday night but it was too late then as we discovered we'd also been a victim. (Hadn't actually noticed at first as the angle we'd looked at the car we could clearly see bike tyres - we just hadn't realised that there were only 3 bikes left of the 4 and they had taken the best one!)

I was informed that the 'lockup' at the caravan site has also now been robbed - happened on Wednesday night this week.

I'm sick of not been able to have any thing nice - cheaper bikes are all well and good but they're not really fit for the biking that we do. Thank God for insurance but boo to our massive excess! Also boo to how this has made us feel generally about the horrible people that sometimes walk among us.

This is awful, made worse by the fact that the site didn't mention the known/enhanced/current risks. Leaving your bike anywhere is a risk of course but the site must be very aware of the local problem.

We too are cyclists Looby (husband does at least 100 miles a week) and all have decent bikes, you are completely right about cheaper bikes not doing the same job.

We often take all three camping, usually chain them to the trailer or lock them on top of the car carrier and then lock them all together up there.

We have taken them to CP a couple of times.

Really sorry for you Looby.

Sad to hear this is still going on at Clumber, yes the c club site does have a place you can lock them up in.

Ferry Meadowws also has a problem, whilst we were there in May the police were on site warning everyone.

I would feel really spooked particularly in a tent if I thought people were snooping round.

I'm afraid we even chain up our aquaroll as they were being pinched a while back.
