Planning our camping trip but we are both nervous as its our first time out for about 20 years (and we had grown ups taking care of stuff then!). We are taking our dog.

I have read the listings but am fairly clueless still. Can anyone recommend a good campsite for first timers in Northumberland or North Yorkshire? And one that is likely to have some summer availability too.

Thank you!

You are spoilt for choice in those two counties. You can go coast to country. I'm not sure what the difference is between sites for first timers or regular campers. I don't think there is one. Most people on sites are more than willing to lend a hand. Stop worrying, go into the campsite search and choose what takes your fancy. If you want something for the dog then a site near a beach or inland near a river would suit.

Go out and enjoy it.

Highburn House in Wooler is one of my favourites. When we were there it had a beautiful clean toilet/shower block, small play area for children, no pub or shop but only a 10 minute walk into Wooler for everything a small town has to offer. It's a few years since we were there but I do remember the pitch was sheltered by hedges on three sides which gave privacy. Also it was very reasonably priced. Have a look on here, but be careful as there is another much more commercial site in Wooler.
I would also recommend Woodhouse Farm, Ripon and Waren Mill near Bamburgh. Make your choice and enjoy, but as for getting summer availability that could be more difficult.

We live near Teesside and we have two campsites which are easy to get to and good for first time campers.
The first is Trig Point 49 at Staithes, it's very casual, no stress, the lady who runs it is great, the location is fab, great chippy nearby, pet friendly pub down the harbour for food, small beach, rockpools, amazing views, decent shower & toilet facilities, £6.50 per adult, half that for kids & £3 for EHU if you need it. They always fit us in no matter what time of year.
The other site we go to is Rosedale Abbey, excellent pitches (large & flat as a pancake), very good kids play area, immaculate shower & toilets, dog walks, lovely village setting, about £28 a night, electric extra but it lasts & lasts, and the couple who run it are extremely helpful and keep the site in tip top condition. It is a big site so will probably have some availability.
Hope this gives you some other ideas for stress free first time camping

Leekworth, Middleton in Teesdale is a very nice site in County Durham. We stayed there last year and would definitely go back.
