Factoring in the ferry, much as I like Mull, it's probably more than 4 hours away for OP. And when we took our dog over there, we had to watch for the free-range sheep - she wasn't interested but the crofter won't know that. Not a problem if the dog gets enough exercise on a lead, though. It's a reason to try Dumfries & Galloway some time - lots of beaches but also forestry walks & Loch Ken is good for dog paddling.

I think Mull would be a stretch too far just now although your pictures and review make it very tempting feeblecat! It looks beautiful.

Dumfries & Galloway is definitely an area we want to explore more in the future. We had a few nights there a couple of years ago and loved it. Many of the costal sites look lovely.

My friend and her boys are going to come along for the first few days of our holiday so campsite choice went to the vote and Sands at Gairloch won so we are heading there for the first few days. It is probably perfect for a gaggle of kids without us having to step foot off the site for two or three days :) Just need to decide whether to stay there for the week or venture elsewhere.

My plan is to be more organised next year and get booked in to one of the Arisaig sites and then possibly over to Mull or Skye from there.
I am also trying to hatch a plan for a spot of Island hopping with just my daughter at some point in the next couple of years.

Tigermouse, your photos are wonderful! I love your blog as well! I was showing my friend earlier and we are both so jealous of your fabulous camping adventures. In a few years when my kids are older and (hopefully) more independant I hope to experience some of that freedom to hit the road with van and tent and get to know this fantastic land of ours.

Glad you finally got fixed up with a camp site, I hope you and your friend and kids enjoy yourselves.

Just a thought re next year if you do get to Arisaig - if you want to go over to Mull then allow yourself lots of time to get to the ferry at Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Once you get away from the main road past Arisaig the route is mainly single track road with many blind bends and inclines and you'll be lucky if you ever manage to get up to 30mph. Although it's very scenic in many places it's a tedious journey and takes ages - see the Ardnamurchan Point post in my blog. Going to Skye would be far easier as Mallaig is only eight miles along the road from Arisaig, also the ferry prices are slightly cheaper.

Leave Mull till next year -RET will be in operation so cheaper, but expect sites to be busier for that reason. Timing wise from Inverness - 2.5 hours to the Fort; 0.5 to Corran (ferries leave at quarter past and quarter to the hour); allow an hour to Lochaline (16 mins to Fishnish) and 1 hour 50 to Fidden.
