When booking a pitch, it says something like "Tents up to 5 berth & 7x5 metres". Do you think 7x5m includes the guy lines or not? I should know this but can't remember as we haven't been camping for a few years! The footprint of our tent is 6.4m x 2.4m, tent is a Khyam Tourer 400 - not sure what size pitch I should be looking at, then there's the car (estate)......Help!! Thanks

The simple answer is to call the respective site, and ask them. Make it clear whether the dims you are telling them are tent only, or tent including guys. Whilst you're on, ask if their pitch will have enough room for your car too... and anything else you'd like to include (Tent extension/awning/canopy, toilet tent/kitchen tent/pup tent etc) and any additional cost they may incur.
That way, you know exactly what you are getting, they know exactly what you want, and nobody has any unpleasant surprises when you turn up!
Like I say, it's a simple answer... but it don't half put your mind at ease!

It would be impossible to stipulate a size including guys because all guy lengths vary depending on the tent and how the guys are placed.
If a campsite stipulates a tent size they generally mean the footprint size as stated by the manufacturers. The pitch size would still have to accommodate tent, guys and car with a bit of room to spare so I would have thought campsites take this into account.
In my opinion when campsites start quoting maximum tent sizes it's usually because they want to make extra money out of larger tents rather than the size of their pitches.
One reason why I recently swapped my 6 man tent for a 4 man tent was because some sites wanted to charge more for a 6 man tent even though it was only fractionally bigger than most 4 man tents and I never had any problem with pitch sizes.

I have heard that within the next couple of years campsites will be charging according to your shoe size on the grounds that larger shoes wear out the grass more. They will also charge according to how high your tent is as it takes up more air space.
