Can anyone help with advice? We are looking for a back to basics site (with toilet but not much else) in the south of England with a wooded area so kids can make dens and also where we would be allowed to have a camp fire/fire pit. Any suggestions?

Evergreen Farm just outside East Grinstead. Composting toilets only but they are kept beautifully clean. No showers and they bring water in containers to your pitch for you. Lots of woodland and fire pits. Also no cars on site, the owners will transport you and your kit to your pitch using a quad bike.
Wardley Hill in Norfolk would be my current favourite, very close to home but I go there if I want to step off the world for a night .
You are free range really once you get there, pitch where you like, light a fire where you like, woods for the children. Very relaxing indeed, no mobile signal or wifi (or work related calls and e-mails) - good reason to go imo!
Oh yes, forgot the basic info - composting toilet and solar shower (which really is quite good, warm with a good flow).
No cars allowed on the camping field which is huge, massive wheelbarrows to use though if you need them.
Ecocamp Beech Estate in East Sussex (just outside Battle). We went the other week. Pitches are in wooded enclaves and someone had previously built a den on the actual pitch. It's set in about 2,000 acres of wood to would be great for exploring and den-building. There are compost loos and bucket showers. Pitches all have firepits and you can buy logs and coal. Grills are provided for BBQing over the fire.
It's a superb campsite and I'd highly recommend it. An added bonus was we got a very clear view of the International Space Station going over, followed by a shooting star. If you like star gazing, it's great as it's unlit at night.
