Im looking for advice. We will be returning to the UK after next summers holiday. We arrive in Portsmouth from Caen at 06.40, allegedly, on Sunday 24th July.
My question is this what is a realistic driving distance north if I am heading to the M6 and know that I cant get home in one go, but will overnight it.
When we leave cornwall we overnight it in Warrington.
However this strikes me as a mid afternoon destination.
Driving is at a steady pace and with an Anssems trailer. Never go above 70.
Any experience out there?
We live in Inverness.

We arrived in Portsmouth on the same ferry this year and made it to County Durham for 2pm. We tend to average around 50 mph with our caravan.
I guess it really depends upon how far you think is acceptable. We tend to have a 350 mile per day maximum.

We used to do that drive to Edinburgh very regularly with the trailer tent, arriving back mid afternoon. We had a cabin on board and my OH made a point of getting a decent amount of sleep, I wrangled the kids. Then I got some sleep in the car once they got plonked in front of the DVD player and was available to take over driving for a couple of hours. So I suppose it depends if you've got kids and if you've got two drivers as well. We dis this for a good 15 years or so, when the kids were younger.
One thing...the driving on the continent is a lot easier, we found. We started using the Amsterdam-Newcastle crossing far more in later years and having the last two or three days of our holiday in the Netherlands. This really worked for us, the ferry crossing is longer so you get more sleep too. Newcastle-Inverness might be an option for you in the future?

We are heading to the Loire Valley. Camping near Blois. So Portsmouth is the best option ferry wise.
We usually stay in a Premier Inn on both legs of the journey to and from Cornwall. However I will feel a bit miffed booking into Carlisle, for example and getting there at 3.00 pm, with hours of day light left.
Suggestions earlier of making it to Durham seem to bear this out.
We drove from St. Ives once to Inverness and it was a horrible journey.
Portsmouth is closer at 600 miles but still a brute of a drive with the A9 as the final leg. Saving the worst till last.

By the time you get off the ferry and along the M275, you'll be joining the A34 at rush hour time and I gather it gets pretty busy.
I think after the ferry crossing and a home counties rush hour journey, I'd be glad of a good long rest by 3.00 pm.

Good point, it isnt always the best of sleeps aboard the ferry either.
I may just cut my losses at Carlisle. 300 miles and halfway. Many thanks.
