Hi
Planning on doing the new route 500 next spring in our new motorhome and wondered if anyone else has been. Grateful for any advice or recommend campsites on the way 😊

We have driven pretty much most of it on our last couple of trips to Scotland. Only saw they have now given it a name of N 500 last week.

Campsites become fewer the further North you head, that said we never booked and never found anywhere full - depends on when you go that might not be the case in high summer.

We are member of CC and C&CC as they have some good sites around the coast so worth considering, there some very good private sites too. Try using the map search facility on here for sites, you will see what is available all the way around and can pick and choose those you like best.

Have a wonderful trip, for us there is no better place to go in a motorhome than Scotland.

We've done most of it in sections before it became promoted as a 500 mile loop, it has its own website which is very useful for what to see & do. I agree with Dot P - there are so few sites that the map search won't get you bogged down. I've not stayed at it, but Clachtoll gets rave reviews. I also know that the Royal Hotel at Ullapool has a few hook-ups round the back, just buy a drink or a bar meal (no, it's not in BritStops).

-------------
2024 = 20 sites / 41 nights. 2023 = 9/23. 2022 = 13/35. 2021 = 11/29. 2020 = 4/20. 2019 = 13/35. 2018 = 20/33. 2017 = 10/22. 2016 = 19/33. 2015 = 15 sites / 27 nights. Didn't count 1976 to 2014.

My parents are actually doing the NC500 at the moment in their campervan. We are waiting to see how they get on before deciding whether to do the route with our tent next year.

They really liked Shore Caravan and Camping Site in Achmelvich. They came round the top onto the east side yesterday and struggled to find a campsite still open in October but got one in Dunbeath eventually. Won't be an issue though in spring of course. They don't like the east as much as the west as it's less mountainous and more industrial. It's probably worth thinking about what sort of countryside you like and planning your stops accordingly. Personally, I think they should have spent more time going up the west side as they are now heading back in towards Glen Affric to compensate. They were going to head to the Cairngorms but it's Scottish half term (something they didn't realise) and some places are really busy.

2019 trips booked so far:

Easter - Red Shoot, New Forest
May - Secret Campsite, Sussex

You need to think about what you like. Personally, though you'd miss out on some great archaeological sites and Duncansby stacks and Dunnet Head, I'd miss out the very north-east and head up the A897 from Helmsdale to Melvich and go west about. Sorry, but, apart from the aforementioned that part of Scotland does nothing for me and even less with the proliferation of industrial wind factories. RSPB at Forsinard is fascinating, if that's an interest of yours. On this route, west is best in terms of scenery and diversity. imho. Not been there myself but cousin has, says there's a good site near Durness and another vote for Clachtoll.

Just completed the NC500 and it was amazing. Camped in Beauly then driven to Wick. Found the East coast not as good as the West Coast but still worth a visit. Camp site in Thurso is a great site but found it too near the main road, busy traffic especially at the weekend. Cannot fault sites in Durness & Applecross. Driving down single track roads makes the journey. Hope anyone who decides to do this trip enjoys it as much as we did.

A fellow camper who had moved from the West coast to the East summed it up nicely... "You live on the East coast, you survive on the West".
