Thanks for all the interesting replies.
Think we have decided to start on Skye and see how we go there.
Take as long as we need and then either go on across to Harris/Lewis or go back to the area around Fort William.
We are conscious of the bank holiday weekend during our two weeks so may need to book somwjhere in advance for our last week.

Verona, the BH is an English, not Scottish BH, however you're right to check. There are also local holidays in various places (means banks and POs are closed and you'll often finds banks closed on all BHs, whether English or Scottish!!!Local holidays ( like school holiday) are usually on relevant Council websites very early in the year - Highland will cover your needs.

To look at specific places in Scotland, this is a good website to begin your search for places of interest.

Undiscovered Scotland

Just click the area on the map that you are going to. Then click on the red dots to bring up the information.

We've been to Scotland in August numerous times over the past few years, including Skye and Lewis and have never booked and always found a site easily. The end of August is when the Scottish kids are back at school and it is noticeably quieter in the Highlands.

Have a look at the very helpful CalMac website. https://www.calmac.co.uk/ There are some good videos (there's a new one on Mull, and I love the Friends music video https://www.calmac.co.uk/friends/alright - just watched it again, always makes me smile), plus helpful links to the various islands with lots of photos. If you have an iPhone, get the free CalMac app - it's good for keeping up to date with changes to the services (looking out the window at how windy it is... the Arran ferry is berthing in Brodick tonight as adverse weather stops it coming back to the mainland - which reminds me, if you're going island hopping, it's wise to factor in a bit of spare time for such unforeseen delays, though the Skye Bridge means Skye isn't strictly speaking an island any more.)

We have done the Jacobean train ride on several occasions. Our site of choice at Fort William, is Glen Nevis Camping & Caravanning Site. It is 3 miles from the town and is walkable. We always walk to the station when going by train as you are gone for most of the day and it racks up the parking charges. There are several sites in and around Fort William, but I think Glen Nevis is probably the nearest.

I'll second that. Glen Nevis is a great site and there is a lovely walk into Fort William along the river. They also keep pitches free for people who just turn up. We've never booked but always got a fully serviced pitch in July and August.

We based ourselves at Lochside site at Strollumus, just ten minutes from Broadford which has a good supermarket and not so crowded as Portree.
The views are amazing from there over the loch but facilities basic. This didn't bother us as the location was stunning.
The island is small enough to enjoy from a single base but sometimes on your travels you just find something that you would prefer.

Ive also stayed on the Lochside site and agree it is really nice location. We were camped just a few yards from the edge of the loch and managed to do a bit fishing from the jetty and caught quite a few Mackerel.
