Hi,

I'm a seasoned camper and in 2014 convinced my husband to give it a go with our then nearly two year old son. Hubby didn't hate it (as long as he had electric for his tablet once our boy was asleep), and enjoyed the freedom it afforded. We stayed in a small clean site near camelford in Cornwall and had a great time.

Last year we had baby number two and we're thinking of camping this august. Boys will be nearly four and nearly one. We are looking for an area of the UK to camp, ideally not more than four or five hours from us, we live near Southampton on the south coast. I like the outdoors but hubby won't walk miles so somewhere with beginners walks. Places to take the kids too. Was thinking Glamorgan in south Wales. Lots of coast, the breacons, waterfalls, castles galore (son loves them), and kiddy places like farms etc. Where else should I be considering? Open to any ideas!

Four or fives hours might be a long time for a one year old, when our kids were that age we usually travelled to sites two or three hours away.

We're happy to leave very early (so they sleep through the first bit) and do stops along the way. Drove to France from here when my eldest son was about ten monthe. Three hours, a ferry, then five hours. Was hard but did it (nessecity required it). It was that experience that makes me limit it to no more than five!

Can recommend:
Willow Valley (from recommendation on here) Willow Valley.
It is in Bude, Cornwall. You have to drive to the coast. But parking on the street is free. Huge shower rooms with room for the whole family. Childrens play area. Grass area in font of pitches to play ball etc. Beach is sandy and lots of rock pools. Cliff top walks to fly our kite. Sorry not done review yet.

Galampton Touring Park, near Brixham, Devon. Good play area. Great views. Steam train goes past several times a day - can hear it and see the steam. Can walk to the train stop. Can get train, bus, ferry tickets. Can drive to various beaches. Crabbing at Brixham harbour too. Have reviewed this site.

Tollgate Farm, Perranporth, Cornwall Tollgate Farm. Make sure you go in term time as they are so booked up. Most people seem to repeat book. They beach is pushchair-able from the site or drive. It is a surfers beach so everyone has beach tents. Flat beach so good for wave jumping (ours liked it incl. the 1 year old). They have animals to pet once a day, and handwash too!

Putlake Adventure Farm Campsite may be worth considering although I don't think it has electric hook up.

Failing that, the other side of the village is Toms Field Campsite which does have EHU.

Plenty of local walks and only 3 miles from Swanage with one of the best child friendly beaches on the south coast...even has a castle and a lighthouse.

We love the Cotswolds, and there's loads to do for families in that area. But no beaches. We've been there many times, and I never get bored of it.

However this year we are having a change and going to Somerset!

We did Cornwall last time, not far from bude, and stayed at a lovely site called cherry cottage close to camelford. Cotswolds might be worth a go. I've never really been. My husband hates the beach so that's not an issue (we go but he tends to park somewhere with baby and I take our little guy). Thanks for the tips guys. I'll give it some thought! Just need my work to sort out my annual leave so I can get booking!

From Southampton how about hopping on a ferry to the Isle of Wight. The Camping and Caravan Club site at Adgestone is good. Family bathroom facilities, pool, games, electricity etc.

Obviously you are surrounded by coast, there is Carisbrooke castle and lots of dinosaur stuff which any self respecting 4 year old boy will love (Museum in Sandown, fossils on the beach at Compton for starters) plus farms and Blackgang chine.
