We are totally new to caravanning (2016 is our practise year) but our aim is that in 2017/18, we intend to travel around the coast of UK, and Ireland. 6-8 months each year, March to October. Back home for the really cold snaps.

Where is home and where to do intend to travel to Ireland from? Sites there are expensive but if you are out of high season some are now in the ACSI scheme, so it may be worth it to buy the book and card )it's a discount scheme where you present the card at sites).
If you intend to stay in popular areas in high season, book in advance and be prepared to pay more; however you could join at least one club (probably the Caravan Club) to access the Certificated Sites, small indepentantly owned sites which are cheaper but often do not have facilities (most have electricity though, and waste emptying). There are no CLs in the Republic of Ireland but a few in Northern Ireland.
Sorry, Certificated Locations (CLs) are affiliated to the Caravan Club. The Camping and Caravanning Club has similar, but not so many, small sites, Certified Sites (CSs). You can join both clubs for about £80 per year, online is cheapest.

We went to the NEC show in February last year and picked up a good discount for the ferry through Irish ferries. Normally the cost was about £350 for unit up to 13m, but including a flexible booking cost to rosslare was only £200 for return. At the Feb NEC show it is good for picking up ferry and camping discounts.
Hope you have a lovely trip but why just the coast of the uk. Inland is pretty fantastic too. Dont forget North Yorkshire. The peak and Lake district to name but a few. J x
I would suggest that you concentrate on 2016 first and then take stock.
My only observation is that you plan to go away in the dearest seasons. I assume that you're retired or otherwise free to come and go, so I would recommend that you split travelling into early & late season. UK in one & Ireland in the other. Would be a lot quieter and cheaper.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

Why go home for colder snaps? Take the caravan to Spain for the winter and live in it. Many peoploe do this and we are hoping that one day we will be able to do the same.

... and I reckon we can do the mainland in about 25 stops....
What's the rush? It took us at least 6 stops to get from Ayrshire to Ullapool in a week. You've got 9 months. You don't get far if you drive a couple of hours before lunch and a couple more in the afternoon. And on some roads in the wilder parts of GB and Ireland you'll average 20 mph as they're narrow & bendy & steep.
But it'll be an adventure, you'll enjoy it.
Cheapest and shortest Ireland ferry crossing by far is Cairnryan to Belfast.
Having said that, if I had 8 months to spend in a caravan, it wouldn't be in the UK and Ireland ..... I would start in Southern Spain in Feb and work my way North. But thats just me
