Yes Borth Y Gest is lovely carry on from that and you get to Morfa Bychan where the campsites actually are so it's about 3 miles from Porthmadog. Then you can drive on Blackrock beach - sorted!
We went from there to Gloucester last year and a couple of years ago as well, diagonally through mid Wales. I can honestly say I have never seen such stunning scenery - well it's up there with Cairngorms and Lakes etc. I guess you can't do this, but it is well worth thinking about going to say Forest of Dean first then heading up through mid Wales just to experiece the views - absolutely fantastic.

It costs £5 to drive onto the beach at Blackrock Sands and park up. Okay maybe if you want to stay all day but I only needed ten minutes or so just to take a few photos and it was foggy anyway so I turned round and drove off again. You can park for free at Borth-y-Gest and walk round the coast path to Blackrock.

While Anglesey has charm, if you're going to tour about a lot, you might get very fed up very quickly having to cross the Menai bridges a lot, because they can get quite busy at times.
Personally I found around Caernarfon to be a good base - a good town nearby for all shopping needs, plus less than 40 mins to all of Snowdon Railway, Beaumaris, Portmeiron, Betwys-y-Coed, Llandudno/Colwyn bay/Conway. A little bit farther gets you to Barmouth or deeper Snowdonia.
It sounds as if it is straight forward to travel around the peninsula from Anglesey- won't be doing it every day- just a couple of days to see some of the coastline. We have heard that Anglesey has some fantastic beaches- so planning to make use of them if the weather is good. Have done a bit of Snowdonia many many years ago- so ideally want to see some of the areas we haven't yet explored. Due to the distance- we are thinking of doing a stop over in Derbyshire in the Peak District, as it looks like a nice half way point- so scenic views for the whole stay! Fantastic blog Tigermouse.

In my opinion, for what it's worth, Holy Island (where Holyhead is situated) has the best beaches, Rhoscolyn is especially good. The town of Holyhead is horrible, but has a good out of town shopping centre.

Thanks
Anglesey does have some great beaches, I've travelled all round the island many times and not found a bad one yet. Some are pebbles and sand, there are small rocky coves and others are just sand - Benllech, where I stay, has a lovely wide sandy beach, also Llygwy, Cemaes Bay, Trearddur Bay, Rhosneigr and Newborough are all sandy. Newborough is worth going to, you can walk along onto Llanddwyn Island where there are some lovely little beaches - on a sunny day it's very picturesque and the views over towards Snowdonia are stunning. Pics on my blog of course

I forgot about Rhoscolyn. It's a lovely beach but can be a bit of a nightmare to get to - very narrow country lane with several ninety degree bends, hedges each side and only wide enough for one vehicle. You just have to hope you don't meet something coming the other way as getting past each other can be difficult.
If you like cheeseburgers then Pete's Burger Bar at Penrhos Coastal Park does the best I've ever had, you can park there and enjoy the view while you chill out.

Lovely beaches like Rhoscolyn (and great coastal walks from there in both directions, Treaddur Bay, and several small coves just north of there, the large village of Valley with several shops.
I agree, Rhoscolyn is a bit of a nightmare to get to. Try not to go on school holiday weekends, as the car park soon fills up. A good pub near there, the White Eagle.
I am trying to persuade OH to stay at a CL near there but he says the roads are too narrow, he is probably right.

Holy island looks interesting- is there much there other than the port?
Breakwater Country Park at the far side of Holyhead has some nice walks and you can go up Holyhead mountain from there. South Stack lighthouse is worth a look if you want to tackle the 400-odd steps, and if you like birds Ellins Tower on the cliff top near the lighthouse is free to go in and has telescopes and binoculars trained on various points of the cliff so you can see the guillemots etc. I was lucky enough to see a pod of dolphins playing in the sea below the cliff when I went.
There's nothing much at Valley, it's just a hamlet on a crossroads with a pub/hotel and a handful of shops, but the Stermat store is worth looking round - it sells everything except food and clothes and it's one of those places where you'll find something you want even if you didn't realise you wanted it.

You've got little ones yes - so Beaumaris Castle, Pila Palas - butterflies, LLanfair PG to look at the long word! and Benllech I guess? You should try Greenwood Forest Park too near Caernarfon too as plenty to do there. There are steam trains and cycle paths etc too - so much to do wherever you go really.
