Upon trying to advance book a pitch for a caravan on the above site for four nights I was astonished to learn that they expect everybody to take pot luck as, in this modern age, they do not operate an advance booking system.
I have no intention of doing this and have advised the owners that this is the first time in 40 years caravanning that this has happened.
I trust fellow members will take note of this 19th century practice.

Why don't more UK campsites do this? Works well enough in France, just turn up, that way no forward planning required. Looks a nice site, if you are going outside school hols then theres bound to be plenty of spaces available so I'd just go.
I don't see a problem. If it is full go elsewhere.
Life is a bit more laid back on Skye.

Torvaig is not the only site that does this and, like Opensauce, I wish more did. I appreciate it's not ideal for main holidays or, like the OP if it's a long trip, but it's great if you're touring and want flexibility.

When we stayed, early summer, they had plenty of space. As previous posters have said there are plenty of sites on Skye so we didn't find any problems.
They are quite open about the non booking system so you know in advance if you try and book then its not a confirmed pitch.
OP, don't know when you're intending going but if you really need to ensure you have a pitch on Skye at least near Portree, you need to (a) check out what's on on the dates in question - visitor info centre a good start as local knowledge about events and the numbers they attract is usually a good guide - and (b) if it's likely to be busy, arrive early or (c) choose a site where you can book. CCC site at Edinbane is only 15-20 minutes on non-single track roads by car from Portree. Dunvegan is about 25 minutes by car and Strollamus about the same, depending on time of day.

I haven't been there for years but last time I visited the owner went round the entire site in the morning collecting site fees. You couldn't even pay for the length of time you were staying. Was a fab site. Quite sloping if I remember rightly but really chilled

Its not on the Island, but Applecross take advance bookings and even on the internet.....seems you have to travel to the island to go back in time...wink
This way you can look out at Skye while eating at the famous Applecross Inn, camp site is a few minute walk. The sunset is stunning. I have a photo if ONLY I knew how to post them...lol
