Hi,
We've just recently bought a caravan & are looking to travel to Scotland this summer, we're in South Wales, so we're thinking of breaking up the journey & stopping for a couple of days in Snowdonia (? Nantcol) on the way up.
But beyond that we're stuck, having never been to Scotland, we're looking for recommendations for sites/areas to visit, all we really need is a site with good clean showers, somewhere we can walk/cycle from (we have 2 energetic children & 2 even more energetic dogs) and some days out to dog friendly places.
Also any Lake District site recommendations, we're thinking of stopping there for a couple of days on the way back, we've been up there once before, but would like somewhere a bit nearer to Windermere this time I think.
Thank you :-)

One question: how long have you got away? If you've only a couple of weeks and with wanting a couple of days in Snowdonia on the way and same in Lakes on the way, my gut feeling is go for Dumfries and Galloway and a coastal site. (If it's a bad summer midge-wise, coast is best!). There's a lot of folks with very good info on D&G coastal sites but one I've stayed at several times (albeit in a tent) was Drumroaming, just south of Wigton. Owners are lovely. Large flat site with spotless showers, games room, washing m/c etc. Dog friendly. Within 45 minutes' drive from a lot of attractions, forest walks and drives.

I have stayed at Glencoe C&CC in Scotland, and Eskdale C&CC in the Lake District, and I would gladly return to both.

I have not been to this site, however, it looked nice from the outside when I was up in Glencoe in Aug 2012:

Invercoe Highland Holidays

And yes, I would recommend visiting Glencoe.

I could recommend lots of sites in Scotland and the Lake District. However, the most dog/child/cycle friendly area I have ever camped in is in the Cairngorms. The sites I would recommend would be either Rothiemurchis or Glenmore. Miles of flat cycle trails and walks from both sites. Straight across the road from Rothiemurchis is a Treezone, Glenmore is right on the edge of a loch just a couple of miles along the road. Reindeer park, landmark (theme park) and lots more round about. Very scenic and too many activities in the area to mention. If you stay at Rothiemurchus a half hour walk takes you into Aviemore where you can find plenty of shops, cafes and child/dog friendly pubs. We have been up that way a few times, each time for 8days and hardly ever had a need to drive the car. Im actually talking myself into another jaunt. Marvellous place.

I'd happily agree with feeblecat regarding the Cairngorms - there's just masses to do.

I'm not best person to ask since about Glenmore though, as I first went there as a babe in 1952, when the road in was single track with heather up the middle; basic facilities and a wee shop. It was over the ensuing 15 years that I had some amazing experiences there, including finding a capercaillie nest (which shut down that part of the forest) and seeing a wildcat mum and two kits. The latter was a confirmed sighting by experts and I must be one of a very few number of non-locals who aren't wildlife experts to have been privileged to see such a sight. To me, it's too organised now to have the same attraction.

Having said that, it's a fantastic area and it's good that it so accessible to so many now.
