Hi there. I'm just back from Kelling Heath today actually. What a fantastic site!
I usually go for smaller, off grid sites, but we were meeting up with my sister and kids so wanted somewhere family-friendly. My parents stayed at KH last year and raved about it so we all decided to go for a meet up this time.
Firstly, I can't speak for summer as we are early in the season and it was fairly quiet. There were a handful of tents and a slightly larger number of motorhomes and caravans but I think many visitors were staying in the lodges.
We stayed in Yellow Dragonfly, which is the premium field. It's very close to the Village Square (where the shop, reception, leisure centre and bar / restaurant are. We were pitch 162, which is closest to the road. It was ideal for us as there are 3 grass pitches together there and it was fairly private. If you just want a single pitch, you may prefer to be elsewhere on the field. Some pitches are surrounded by gorse bushes so you do get extra privacy. Our pitch was close to the road that goes through the site, but there's a 10mph limit so it wasn't noisy. It may be noisier there in the summer though when there are more people staying. As for sun, it was definitely a sunny spot - albeit on the one day that the sun came out!!
We did see some of the other fields and they had good spots too. The key is finding one surrounded by gorse, but you may need to phone up and ask them which are best in that regard. I must say that the staff were really helpful on the phone. We wanted 3 pitches together (2 tents and a campervan) and we got the perfect spot for our needs.
I hope you find a good spot as it's well worth a visit.
