Hello,
I am looking for a relatively wild camp site in or around the area of Settle in Yorkshire.   Whilst many sites are listed, they all seem to be rather manicured. From Wales, we are used to the wilderness and are looking for something that is not too tended. We'd like to be able to use our brazier, to be away from artificial lighting and noise - with access to clean loos and shower facilities and it must be dog friendly. Any suggestions gladly received.
Thanks in advance,
Ali :-)

Wild, clean loos and showers don't seem to go together somehow! Hope you find somewhere suitable though.

I agree. I'd go for a Certificated Site or Location, they're more likely to be as wild as it gets in that part of the world - farmers have less time to mow lawns & tend flower beds, and the views are more likely to be rural. There are 19 sites (dog, loos, toilets) centred on Settle but that drops to 4 if you want a campfire. Hopefully one of those will suit.

-------------
2024 = 20 sites / 41 nights. 2023 = 9/23. 2022 = 13/35. 2021 = 11/29. 2020 = 4/20. 2019 = 13/35. 2018 = 20/33. 2017 = 10/22. 2016 = 19/33. 2015 = 15 sites / 27 nights. Didn't count 1976 to 2014.

Thanks for your replies. Obviously you've not camped in Wales...field sites with no lighting, campfires not an issue, basic loos n showers but clean nonetheless and affordable!! Certified sites seem to require a £30plus fee to join... and often there are no loos... what happened to camping being a cheap way to holiday???

I have caravanned all over Wales, Rhydywernen Farm near Brecon is pretty much as you describe, but you have to be a Caravan Club member to use the CL part. The other part of the site is a non-electric camp site which allows fires. Do the sites you have been to have electricity as it's a must have for us (loos and showers are not, as we use our caravan ones).

For the reasons you have described, wanting the more natural type of camp-site with clean loos and showers, we decided it was worth spending the joining fee for the Camping and Caravanning club in order to use their certified sites. As we now have a caravan we have also joined the Caravan Club, again just to use the 5 van sites. We have only ever used the club sites on a couple of occasions due to their cost.

We goto Orcaber Farm in Austwick (about 5 miles outside of Settle) clean loo's and wash up. Spotlessly clean site. But thankfully, not a lot else. Also, we get to use our bbq as a fire at night.

Hi Shirley,
Do most of the certified sites have loos and showers then? I thought they didn't need to provide them. This may be worth investigating further if they do...
Thank you for your response! ;-)

Hi Anne,

Some have electric, some don't. We don't need that but as we are tenting we do need loos and showers. We found a great farm site last year nr to Stackpole, Pembrokeshire called St Petrox.
Cheers,
Ali

Yes, I have had my eye on that one. We went to a CL near Haverfordwest (loo but no shower) for Christmas/New Year and went over that way a couple of times.

Hi, a lot of the site's offer facilities which can vary from basic to brilliant. Have a look at http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/ukcampsites, click on the members exclusive sites box and you can then search for sites with these by filling in the boxes on the left. Uk campsites search also allows you to look for CL/cs sites and you can then read reviews.
We vary rarely use any otherkind of site now as we much prefer the quieter sites. Many are on working farms and like yourself having been used to the field sites in Wales would prefer to keep to that type of site.
Hope you are able to find what you are looking for.

Shirley

This is the site mentioned above by Biffster. It is a camping and caravan club certified site. Good reviews.

Good choice. You won't be disappointed. We are heading back there at the start of June. Very handy for us as it's only 20 something miles away. We go walking around the area regularly when not camping also.
