We have a seriously big tent - the Maritsa 700, and can't open it in our garden or lounge either.
We mess about with it in the bathroom (yes, it takes over the whole bathroom), and rotate the bits that are open to the air over a couple of days. I'm not sure we've ever packed up a completely dry tent - I'm from Manchester too, and we're very used to the rain!
As for sites, might be just over the 3hr mark, but we went to a site in Minchinhamptom last summer. HUGE pitches (not really marked out, but big field and tons of room), very relaxed atmosphere, dogs welcome. Can't recommend it enough.
Tobacconist Farm, that's what it was called.
Or, there's one in Garforth in Leeds that's dog friendly. Not quite as big, and has a children's play area and animals (goats, alpaca, rabbits etc). Again big pitches, very friendly and relaxed, lovely owners, suitable for day trips to York, dog friendly (owner has dogs). Bit of road noise, but nothing that bothered us. I think that ones called Aberford CS.
