Hello

We are looking to go camping late May early June for a week we are looking to travel no more than 3 hours from Manchester. As we have our two dogs with us We are pitching our new large tent for the first time , I have been looking at the long term weather it seems unsettled for the next couple of weeks, we don't mind a bit of rain but looking at the taking down the tent we really could do with dryish weather as we have no where to dry the tent when we get home.
Do any of you lovely campers out there have some ideas ?
all would be gratefully received.

Sorry no suggestion on a site 3 hours from Manchester BUT I would be cautious about not drying a tent out when back home. Even if you think it is dry the chances are there will be some condensation somewhere.

I don't have room to pitch my tent at home but take over either the conservatory or lounge to complete the drying process. OH hates it but that's the nature of camping

Dont take chances with a wet tent! They go mouldy so quickly and really smelly!
Re campsite what about the Forest of Dean, Bracelands is a great place to base yourself out of school holidays and has access to some great dog walks

Thank you for the advice on damp tents , our home is nowhere near large enough to dry our tent in. Might just leave and check the weather next week and follow the warm sunshine ( fingers crossed).

When you are drying a tent you do not need to have it all open at once. The garage is good for drippy tents, just place over things (check for pointed objects).

If it is a damp tent some peeps use their lounge to open out. Can't do it all the tent at once but let the air in and move the open areas around.

Yes my house isn't big enough - I have a 7.5mx4.5m tent, and my lounge aint that big! I just open it a bit at a time as much as I can, then use chairs/tables to prop different parts of the inside open. My garden isn't big enough either but it is surprising how quickly it can dry out unless it is soaking wet, then it takes a little longer

We have a seriously big tent - the Maritsa 700, and can't open it in our garden or lounge either.

We mess about with it in the bathroom (yes, it takes over the whole bathroom), and rotate the bits that are open to the air over a couple of days. I'm not sure we've ever packed up a completely dry tent - I'm from Manchester too, and we're very used to the rain!

As for sites, might be just over the 3hr mark, but we went to a site in Minchinhamptom last summer. HUGE pitches (not really marked out, but big field and tons of room), very relaxed atmosphere, dogs welcome. Can't recommend it enough.

Tobacconist Farm, that's what it was called.

Or, there's one in Garforth in Leeds that's dog friendly. Not quite as big, and has a children's play area and animals (goats, alpaca, rabbits etc). Again big pitches, very friendly and relaxed, lovely owners, suitable for day trips to York, dog friendly (owner has dogs). Bit of road noise, but nothing that bothered us. I think that ones called Aberford CS.

Hoddom Castle in South West Scotland is only about 2 hours from Manchester, just off the M74 near Lockerbie.

Good for dogs and there is nice bar on site that allows dogs and serves meals.

Long term forecasts are not that reliable.   I have a biggish tent, with a smallish house. If my tent is wet, I put it in the bath and rotate it, to let the water drip into the bath. Either drape it over doors, bannister and so on or if sunny or dry day, then it goes into the garden to dry off. I don't bother erecting the tent in the garden.

When I pack up on the day I'm leaving the campsite. I leave the tent up as long as possible if it's dry, to give the tent to dry out a bit.

Understand your concern about drying the tent, it's something that also always concerns us as we don't have a garden big enough to put it out, so if the weather is good we take it to my mam's garden, if bad in her garage, but we have been known to move all the furniture back in the living room and drape the tent as much as possible. Whack on the heating and go out for a couple of hours.

As for sites, can highly recommend Clover Fields just outside of Buxton in the Peak District, only thing is it's adult only.

Thank you for all your advice, we have decided to go a bit further (Devon ) but hopefully the weather will be ok.

We had difficulty dry out our last tent once as we have two huskies and leaving the tent out to dry in the house was a nightmare.

So huge thank you to for all your advice I'm just hoping the weather will be good at least on the last couple of days and we won't have a problem with drying out a huge tent

One thing we have done in the past is pack up a day early if there's been a really nice dry day and rain forecast for the next. We've stayed until later in the day and just had a leisurely pack up with everything dry. You don't really lose out much as you'd spend the next morning just packing up anyway!

Thank you for all your advice

We decided to go a bit further and went down to Devon, the weather was fantastic not a drop of rain for the week so no need to dry our very large tent.
The dogs was so well behaved for their first camping trip, they coped well with the travel. We made sure we stop plenty of times just to let them out and walk about.

Role on August 2 week this next time :)

Again thank you for all the help
