Just looking at the tariff for our chosen site next week ready to book. We have a new tent, an Outwell palm coast 6 (aka white cove 6), so want to try a full set up including canopy which we wouldn't normally use just for the weekend but hey it's new and we're all excited!

Now my question is does our canopy which adds an extra 2.5m count as:
A) a full awning
B) a porch awning
C) or should it be includied in square footage of the tent

Each option brings a varying additional cost c) being the most expensive by a mile! I know the obvious answer is to call the site which I will tomorrow but just wandered what the general consensus was.

Don't declare it and only put it up at your leisure. It is unlikely that there will be any post facto charges.

It is immoral the way in which sites seem to try to extort extra money.

We once camped beside a New Zealander who declaimed "Jeez they will start charging for farts next" and I don't think he was far wrong!

If the canopy and tent fit on the pitch you've bought, then fine, you've paid for the pitch. If it doesn't and it means you can't fit on the pitch, then that's up to you! You could always say that you just got the canopy and would like to try it out and seem to be saying that you're only there for a w/end, so maybe the site operator will let you with no extra cost.

It does seem that some sites will try and screw money out of people for all those extras but there's also plenty of sites who don't give discounts for singletons. I guess it's up to your conscience.

Yup I was thinking of just chancing my luck. It's Belhaven at Dunbar we're hoping to head to. My line manager has been there a few times in her caravan and said its a really good friendly site. Will see what my pitch is like. as I said its not essential but would be nice.

I never know when the prices talk of awnings and porch awnings whether these refer to tents or caravans.

I do object when our awning gives us 1 metre more to open up the sloping front door for rain to not come in (Montana 6p). Ours also does not have a door.

Pay the cheapest one!

You'll find it mainly applies to caravans, I normally phone the site and tell them my tent is just under 10m long and see if they can accommodate me, my tent and awning measure 9.4m long and 4m widely, never had any problems.

Scooby.

I think the costs for awnings and porch awnings will refer to caravans, we have never been charged for using a tent extension pretty similar in size to what you describe, we just inform the campsite of our tent size (if needed when booking), and add the extension after pitching, as long as it fits on the pitch it should be fine.

I agree with ficklejade, some sites will charge you for everything they can think of, thankfully these are in the minority in my experience.

Aah, tentaddict7, I remember about 10 years ago venturing well south of the border to help out on an event as part of the safety team in my wee pop-up. Not only was I charged for two people but, because very heavy rain forecast, I put my tarp over the tent stop it getting in through sloping door and let me boil the kettle outside. They tried to charge me extra for that. No Way!

ficklejade. seriously, that is bad!! I hope you told them where to go....!

The worst we had was an overnight stop in the Lake District, we had two small tents, one 3 man for our two teenagers and the dog, and one 2 man for us, both on the same pitch, no electric needed, we had not prebooked but had confirmed with the site that they had space for us before we set off.

On arrival, we were shown to a grassed area, we were the only tent there, and surrounded by the access road with caravans pitched all round the edge of that. The grass was so boggy that the campsite warden had to literally point out exactly where to pitch, we were only about 4 feet apart in our tents and yet they wanted to charge us for two pitches, bearing in mind the dreadful condition of the pitch and that they weren't electric pitches we argued but they were not having it. It was late and we were tired after a long drive so we eventually gave in, but considering we were only actually there for 12 hours, we were charged £32 without electric hookup.

It was that alone that made me resolve never to go back there, they don't even advertise a price tariff on their website, so although we should have checked beforehand, I relied on the good reviews on here alone, mistake!

It was a nice site in other ways and had we not felt ripped off by their charges we would have returned.

Some businesses simply do not help themselves, so voting with your feet is the only way to send the message.
