Hi all,

I know it's near impossible but looking for a site in Cumbria that takes same sex groups. Yes, we will likely be a little loud (but not really bad), wanting a few beers and the freedom to have a campfire and a BBQ.

We're not bad people and the place will be spotless when we leave.

Had no luck searching and our last place unfortunately has had planning permission issues so we can't go back.

Any help appreciated!

I don't know if this is still an option these days and if you would be happy with no facilities but when we were 17ish a group of us wrote to about 5 farms with stamped addressed envelopes, we used an Ordnance Survey map to find the names of farms, then wrote a letter to something like "The Owner", name of farm, name of nearest village, name of nearest town, name of county. We put in a letter saying something like who we were, that we wanted to camp, we were all guys so could not get in on a campsite and were they able to help us. We offered payement and a deposit to be given back if we left the area tidy.

Amazingly we got all the envelopes back and one of the farmers had hosted Scout Camps previously and he was happy to help us. He gave us a field next to a river, left us a tractor trailer to put our rubbish in and even gave us a shovel to dig a hole in the next field behind the hedge for us to squat over when nature called. We had a great time there. Happy Memories.

The guy was great and gave us our deposit back days before we were due to leave. We left him a case of beer on his doorstep as he wouldn't take any money.

Sadly we tried to go there again about 5 years later, the number we had did not work, and when we tried writing to him we had a letter back from a property management company saying the farm was now private holiday cottages, so I can't be too much help, but may be worth a try.

You can camp on Piel Island near Barrow-in-Furness, but unfortunately no campfires (see below). Otherwise, plenty of space to "be a little loud" without disturbing the handful of people who live on the island. Might be worth a try if you are willing to compromise on the campfire.
All other details of how to get there etc (by ferry!) are on the Piel Island website.

(Copied from the website)
Q. Can I camp on the Island?
A. Yes you can. Camping is £5.00 per tent per night. Parties over 5 are to call 07516 453784 to pre book. Please call at the bar on arrival to book on. Piel Island is a S.S.S.I (Site of Special Scientific Interest) so you must adhere to general guidelines. Disposable bbq’s are to be at least 12” off the ground so as not the damage the grass. You are not allowed campfires on the Island or beach. There are outside toilets on the island which are not locked at night but remember to bring a torch as there is no electricity on the Island. All campers must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Camper vans or trailer tents cannot be brought onto the Island as there is no vehicular access.

Have you tried camping bunk barns, my oh goes away on a boys weekend every october and they always go for a bunk barn. There is a good one near Buckden in the yorkshire dales, not too far away and I assume there will be loads of them in the lake district.
