Hello, I'm Gareth and I was hoping to get some help as my family and I hope to buy a caravan soon.

We had seen a cheap starter caravan that was in excellent condition and bone dry etc etc and we had identified a site we had been to before and liked as the location (on a seasonal pitch) for said caravan.

When I spoke to the site they told me they only accept caravans that are 15 years old or younger. I would like to know how common this is and whether anyone can recommend a site in north wales. The site we liked is Fron farm and the seasonal price was £1500.

Thanks in advance
Gareth

Never heard of a site imposing an age limit except for on static sites. However I have never gone for a seasonal pitch, just touring pitches. Good job apparently, as my caravan is 28 years old.

We tour a lot in North Wales and of late we have noticed that some of the most popular sites around Snowdonia are not taking tourers only statics/seasonal vans and they also have an age limit on vans. When we had our 23 year old Dethleffs Nomad we were rudely ignored by 2 staff members and upon asking for the owner he looked at the van and told us he was only taking static/seasonal vans but as it was late in the season he said we could stay for £20 per night with no facilities. It also seems to be a theme that more and more sites are only for seasonal pitches. Its best to ask first.

Happy Camper!

You seem to have had quite a different experience to me, clickerty. Never had any sites say that they are only taking seasonal vans, and never had any problems with the age of my van either.

Most of the big sites near me (Yorkshire) seem to be adopting this rule.

Just trying to keep the sites looking appealing I guess.

Maybe this is a regional thing. I have recently visited sites in Cornwall, Devon, Sussex, Norfolk, Rutland water, and Dorset, and none of them even hinted at such a rule. Our caravan at 28 years old has been made most welcome, and I have seen even older caravans on even the most prestigious sites.

I am a member of the Camping and Caravan Club, and none of their sites have such a rule as far as I am aware, and the only thing normally refused is commercial vehicles.

I do however know that the practice of imposing age limits on static vans is quite commonplace. I have often heard of static sites requiring owners to remove their vans once they reach 10 years old, but I think this has more to do with maximising profits than anything else. Sites make a lot of money out of removing and siting vans, so it is in their interest to keep turnover high. Sites have nothing to gain and everything to lose by restricting the age of visiting touring vans. We all pay the same pitch fees.
