Help please.

We have done thousands of miles and stayed at more than a hundred sites in France. We can always find a site en route, without any need for booking.

We are travelling to Cornwall at Easter from the south east and I thought it would be fun to take the tent and break the journey half way.

I am struggling to find a site that says it takes tents, so many seem to concentrate on caravans which makes me feel our old tent would be unwelcome.

I have an aversion to booking! Am I kidding myself when I hope to find a space on a site which would have room for us on the 5th or 6th of April not too far from the A30? Cheapish and simple is what we like, don't need elec either.

Ashe Farm sounds a possibility - go north from Ilminster towards Taunton where you meet the M5. Is that too far off your route?

Thank you Berriow for that. I should have thought of you for recommendations as I often think you have the same taste in French sites as we do. Looking at the map its looks like about 8 miles off the route but does look our sort of place. Pleasant surprise to see a number of tents in their photos rather than lines of caravans and motorhomes.

Any opinion on if there would be room for us? Given its Easter. I just have no experience.

Their website says "booking is not necessary though we do advise it during peak season" .

And if it's a wild, wet night the Travel Lodge at Taunton is around the £50 mark.

Good wishes to you.

That's good one too, thank you. Similar distance from the A30. Something to muse over.

Thank you saxo1 for that suggestion. I looked at the website and it's certainly in an excellent position for a stopover and cheap! The photos of the serried ranks of motorhomes rather put me off, however I am saving all the suggestions to my map and will wing it on the day I think.

No one has given an opinion on the hazard of not booking and the likelihood of us ending up with nowhere to go.

Any thoughts please?

Quite a few local sites not far from the m5 bridgwater junctions, one that is what you are looking for is Folletts farm, Bridgwater. Not sure if they have any facilities there thou, so may pay to ring them. We use it for our trial pitch / checking the tent over at the start of the camping season as it's only 5 mins from our house.

Thank you leeroy 1982. Sounds good. We are not members of the caravan and camping club, not sure it that is a problem?

I received a lovely email from the lady at Ashe Farm last night saying that as we don't need elec they will have room for us. She asked me to give her a bell prior to the day so she knows who coming which is fair enough. At present and unless the weather is awful I think we may go for there, definitely looks our sort of place. Attracted though by West Down Orchard as well for its position.

At least now I have some lovely recommendations which is great. Add to that I have been checking out the menus at the nearby pubs as well. Frankly can't wait.

I can't see not being a member being a problem, the chap who owns it owns Athens farm across the road so I will find out when I see him next for you.
There is a local pub, bower inn, which is very highly rated for food about a 5 min drive away (also a bed and breakfast to, as Seen on that b&b programme in TV, which they won there episode) and

Sorry Leeroy1982 for not thanking you sooner. I have marked Follets Farm on my map, might well call in sometime just to have a nosey, if only to visit the pub! For this trip it really is a long way out of our way as we are travelling on the A303 and A30 from the south east to Cornwall.

Thank you

Thanks aliandandy. Pretty sure we will be using Ashe Farm unless the weather is very unkind. I love the name of the nearby village 'Thornfalcon', like something out of novel.

Counting the days.
