We are a new campsite and our facility block is currently being installed. It has 4 shower units, 4 loos, 4 hand basins and 2 washing up sinks. It is not huge but HOW DO WE HEAT THE HOT WATER ... every single electrician and/or plumber arrives on site and tells me something different. We have 20 pitches (max 8 per pitch).

I cannot get enough electricity for electric showers so am looking at LPG but what system do I use to heat the water? Or a water tank on electric or gas .... all advice so welcome.

How about wood pellets? We were on a site near Geneva, albeit a bit bigger than yours, that used it quite successfully, plus you've an additional selling point. I had a little search on 'Commercial wood-fired boilers' and there's options out there, both for pellets and wood chip. I think energy grants may still be available, and might even be cheaper to run, depending on where you are.

Personally I would keep it simple. Solar panels would help offset the cost of electricity, particularly in the summer. The CMC seem to use Calor Gas as their main source of energy for heating water.Perhaps gas is more responsive when you have a lot of people on site?

Or possibly solar thermal panels (I guess David was referring to solar photovoltaic panels?).

No idea about the relative installation costs etc though.

how about a small electric heater fitted under each of the sinks, then there is no waste water as the hot water is right there, as for the showers i know there was a Rennai heater specifically for use with 4 showers.....

As you will have a high demand for hot water just about twice a day, propane would seem to be the most practical solution.

The use of solar thermal panels would necessitate a large water storage tank, and would not provide hot water in the mornings.

Your question can only be answered by a qualified plumber/heating engineer or electrician. Yours is a commercial installation so will need to comply with current regs I'm sure.

Any tradesman needs to know the customer's requirements before he can quote on a job. So you will have to calculate volume of hot water required according to amount of campers you might have so hot water is available on demand at all times.

It will be not difficult to calculate the most economical method of heating your water electricity or lpg but you need a tradesman who is experienced in commercial installations of this type. You will also need to ensure your fixtures & fittings are suitable for a commercial installation.

Definitely a job for an M&E Engineer and not a general plumber/electrician.

A calorifier is the usual way to heat and store large volumes of water when there is demand over short periods of time.

The tank volume and how this water is heated and reheat periods all need consideration.

Burco boiler. Cheap to buy, quick to heat and thermostat cuts out when desired temperature reached. Been using one on my campsite since 2009. Taps break every now and then but a cheap 2 minute fix. Put up instructions for re-filling and max. temp setting (3 is perfect for washing up). This is me:
