Can I get everyones thoughts on site prices? We live in Scotland and sometimes go to sites in Callander and Dunbar. Our main caravan holiday we spend down South and by that I mean Whitby, Scarborough, Great Yarmouth and surrounding places. We have found that there is a big price difference between Scotland and England-some by as much as 40%! I once discussed this with someone from Bridlington who said he loved touring Scotland and spending his holidays there. I said to him about the difference in prices and his reply was that Scotland has so much more scenery etc so worth the extra money. (I did point out the weather, midges etc). The sites we have stated in were beautiful with immaculate facilities and fully serviced pitches so its not down to cheap and nasty sites. Im just curious as to what peoples thoughts are on the North/South price divide
thanks in advance

Costs more to heat your caravan in Scotland. A lot more! Maybe the income tax rate or business tax is higher. I've only got as far as Braid#s in Gretna, and Queensbury Bay nearby.
It's a tad warmer there . . . .allegedly!

Fewer sites in Scotland apart from the south (lack of decent land/large estates) could be part of the reason I suppose.

We've done quite a bit of Scotland over the last couple of years and haven't found any difference in price.

Once again you have to look at like for like. I don't think its the case that Scottish sites are more expensive than sites down south.
It is fair to say that some sites could be more expensive but that would apply to both North and South in my experience.

Thanks to all of you on your comments-it definitely gives me something to think about especially the cost of heating a van in Scotland which I hadnt even thought about! I appreciate you taking the time to reply

I take it from that you are talking about a metered site.

I lived for a long time in Hampshire before retiring back north to Aberdeenshire. I've found very little difference in site prices between here and back in England. I've read plenty of posts where people complain about excessive prices in Devon & Cornwall etc...

C&MC sites have a fairly uniform price scheme and there are plenty of private sites which charge reasonable prices. Costs a lot more to heat a van?? Where did you hear that? The cost for EHU is no more here than anywhere else.

I find UK prices more expensive than French sites - especially for what you get. Generally wifi is included in the French sites (notall by all means). Caravan Club sites are expensive- but at least you know what you are likely to get. But why do thye charge for wifi and not for tv. Maybe it should be an either/or/both.

Maybe it's just the site owners thinking along the same lines, (folk generally leave heaters on all night/for longer in Scotland than England?) so even on un-metered pitches, they could add a £ here and there, either on the direct nightly EHU tariff, or hidden in the overall pitch fee?

I'm under the impression (from reading this site) that nobody is allowed to make any profit on actual electricity... but of course, I presume camp sites can charge what they want for the provision of the EHU post?

Callendar years ago was great for the van, they have put their prices up so much though that I wouldn't go back.

Don't know about Dunbar, have you tried Stirling, Witches Craig, Moffat The Green Frog Caravan Site , if the kids/grandkids are old enough to go exploring on their own, Paxton Hall over Eyemouth way is fantastic, Walled Garden over in Maybole also Mount View Caravan Park Biggar, Girvan Barrhill Holiday Park.

Use the search and also the Virtual Brochure, then research the ones you like for price difference.
Stay away from big tourist areas we tend to get ripped off for pitch prices there all over the UK.

Loved the one about it costing more to heat your van in Scotland than England, especially as Peterws crossing the border just does not count as being able to say that, he obviously needs to explore. Btw we do not put jumpers on until it is -1% :-)
