The thing is, where do you draw the line? Could campers arrive in buses, trucks, artics, you name it? I guess there has to be some ruling to prevent campsites looking like motorway service station car parks.

It's fairly common. I don't have a car just a plain white van which I use to carry my dogs around to shows. Went down to a campsite in the middle of Wales last year for my friends wedding. I had my 4 year old nephew with me who was due to be page boy. I told them when booking that I didn't have a car just a van. When I got there it was getting dark and they weren't going to let me on as I had a commercial vehicle. There were no other campsites in the area and we didn't have the money for a b&b even if we could have found one. I was horrified they could even consider throwing a single female with a young child out into the middle of nowhere at that time. In the end after tears from my nephew (who thought he wasn't going to get to the wedding) and arguments from me as I had made it clear when booking they allowed us to stay but we were only allowed to stay the 2 nights and had to be off-site all day. We were also told not to book or return to that site again

Last BH at Broomfield farm a lad pulled up with a van with roofing contractors on the side.
Hoddie etc.
Being a sloped site he did not have any blocks
I helped him out and he said he had only just got the caravan and was trying it out.
He returned later with a brand new ford kuga, and had a great weekend.
Thats just not tar everyone, with the same brush.

You cannot tar anybody with the same brush. Any hint discrimination on grounds of race etc is prohibited. So it's done on the grounds of vehicle type or caravan make. Generally speaking campsites that operate these type of bans do so on past experience.
They happen to be in areas popular with certain groups of caravanners who cause noise & disturbance to other site users & as pointed out in my previous post they overstay & often do not pay. I would agree discretion should be used but often reception staff are employees not the boss so cannot step outside their remit so you cannot blame staff for doing what they are instructed to do.

We were on a lovely site in a lovely rural county and there were 2 traveller families set up in one corner. They had a seasonal deal, clearing ditches, cutting hedges etc on the site and across the county.
The kids were incredibly well behaved, polite and respectful, all the kids got on. It was interesting hearing them talk about their life.
There are sites where you can't arrive in any vehicle at all! And one on an island on the Thames for kayakers.

I would just like to confirm we are not a traveller family just a quiet family with one well behaved son and a crazy lab.

It doesn't matter who or what you are.
If the site has a rule that they do not allow commercial vehicles, due to either their Planning Consent not allowing it (See Jakers comment earlier) or because of past experiences, then that is the end of it and you will have to find another site.
Sites are a business and can make any rule they want, which is why we also have adult only sites and dog free sites. Either you conform or you don't.

One of the reasons why I joined the caravan and motorhome club.. they allow vans on even ones sign written.
I still ring them though if it's a site I've not stopped on before.

They do allow them, please see my quote above 3 vans on site over the same weekend, ours is a plain white van with no sign writing.
