We are looking to visit the Peak District for the first time the 2nd week in July 2018 after our first week around Pickering.

We are looking to travel to a new area and have never visited the Peak District so looking for some advice on best place to stay and visit.

We have twin axle touring van so need a good size pitch. Not to fussy about club house or play park it will just be our two selves after handing back the grand kids the week before 18 month and 4 year old so nice relaxing week required to recharge the batteries.

We generally like looking around villages and towns and doing the odd visitor attraction not going to be heading up in to the hills or any mounting biking or the like.

We will be travelling back up to Scottish borders at the end so would prefer north or mid area for our first visit but would go the distance if better.

Open to all your suggestions and advice probably will be our first visit of many to discover the area so no need to see everything this time around just find a good base and start looking around.

thanks in advance

Andy

I would try around Bakewell or Castleton.
The Peak District is good walking/hiking country and also lots of flat cycle paths you can walk on.
We like Monsal head hotel stables bar for lunch and the views are great too.
All the villages are very pretty around there too.
Caringsington water nice for a walk.
Buxton nice spa town.
Matlock bath nice too with cable car up heights of Abraham.
And of course you have Chatsworth close by. Expensive but worth a visit.
Good sites are the cc site at Chatsworth if you can get in.
Beechcraft farm near Buxton and a few good CLs around too.

You should try Yorkshire Dales if you haven't been up there. Hawes. Leyburn. Masham. Muker. Keld . Pateley bridge, Bolton Abbey. Grassington. Kettle well. Settle. Malham but to name a few. Gorgeous countryside.

There is some very pretty limestone scenery & attractive spa towns. Interesting well-dressing traditions too, dating back to the Plague. Tissington Hall, Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall (my favourite), Eyam Hall... The south part isn't that much farther, it won't add more than an hour to your journey home.
It can be very busy - it's surrounded by major cities, so 20 million people (x4 Scotland's population) live within an hour's drive, it can feel like all of them have come for a picnic or a walk or to sit outside the pub on a sunny weekend.

Any of the sites around Carsington Water, very nice area with easy access to the A50 and M6 about and hours drive away for headding back north.

Plenty of pretty villages and heritage centres to explore, including Ashbourne, Wirksworth and Belper which is a World heritage site. The High peak Trail provides some pretty walks and nearby village pubs. Bakewell is a pretty little town but is a victim of it's own popularity during high season, when it gets very congested with traffic and pedestrians alike, being a Mecca for many coach tour drop offs.
