We are taking a couple weeks to tour the south west in our new campervan in August with our 2 small boys (4 and 8), starting point is Liverpool

Itinerary is as follows;
- 2 nights in forest of Dean - camping in the forest site
- 4 nights in Dorset
- 4 nights in Penzance
- 2 nights Newquay
.....................not sure if we should change this to 2 nights in Penzance and 4 Newquay though?

Looking for a stop off for the last 2 nights of the trip, aim will be to stagger the long drive back to Liverpool - was thinking maybe cheddar gorge or Malvern hills? any recommendations please on this last leg an also on he split of nights between Newquay and Penzance. I want to get this all booked in the next few days

I would spend the 4 nights in the Newquay area as I think there would be more for you and your boys to do. There are several beaches (weather permitting)! and also Newquay Zoo.

Dorset's lovely. We've stayed at a few sites in this area including Longthorns Farm and Birchwood. Longthorns is a short stroll to Monkey World so no vehicle needed if you go there for the day. Longthorns also have alpacas that you can walk too which is a bit of a novelty. You also have Swanage, Studland and Corfe Castle nearby and the steam train.

I can't really advise on Cheddar as we've not stayed at any sites in that area. I'm sure someone will be on with recommendations and advice. Have a great trip.

I wouldn't bother spending 4 days near Penzance!

If you do go further down, would recommend staying near St. Ives in preference to Penzance.    Although they aren’t far apart.

Hi,
If you are heading back up the M5 you might like to look at the Tudor site in Gloucestershire.
A short way off the M5 and right next to the Sharpness canal and Slimbridge wetlands with all it's exotic birdlife (it is not cheap to go in though).
If you have bicycles great ride up the canal.
Hope you have a great time in your new van.
Campsite reference below.

Lianne, Instead of trying to cram four locations into twelve nights I would choose just two of them and spend more time on holiday and less time on driving. For your Newquay area campsite with children I suggest a full week at Trewan Hall at St Columb Major.

Thanks for the advice - after a bit more research we are shelving Penzance for 6 nights in Newquay

We've camped for years, since before we had children. But the idea of the campervan was to stay in more places each trip and to help split the long journeys

- 3 nights forest of Dean camping in the forest site
- 4 nights in Dorset
- 6 nights in Newquay
- 2 nights TBC to spilt the journey on the way home

All but the last leg now booked!
Now need to sort Easter 5 night break - somewhere within max 3 hours drive of Liverpool

Thanks Again

For your return journey from Cornwall look at Cheddar, Longleat or if you want to get a bit more of the journey done first, Staffordshire (Lichfield & Cannock Chase area).

Agree wholeheartedly with North Wales for Easter but look at Snowdonia (pretty much anywhere between Llandudno, Betws-y-Coed and Porthmadog) and choose between that and Anglesey. Loads to do in both areas so I wouldn't try to squeeze both in in a week.

I second the site Tudor Park at Slimbridge, nice site lovely showers, nice pub serving good food and children were allowed in, right at the entrance. We were there for three nights June 2017 {our third visit} on our way back from Cornwall

Tudor Park also now booked. 15 night tour of the south west all sorted. I’ve not been to Cornwall since I was a child and my husband has never been, can’t wait. Thanks for the help all

When you are on the road, make sure you listen to local radio travel reports. Avoid being on the A30 on a Friday afternoon and the peak times on Saturday (10am -2pm). No fun stuck in queues with children!
