We are visiting relatives on the Solway coast / D&G area of Scotland at the end of May.
Does anyone know of a good campsite in the area?
Ideally we'd like somewhere where we can jump straight on bikes and be in the forest, kind of like the Forestry Commission site in Bedgellert in Snowdonia- that kind of thing.
I stayed at Drumroamin a few years ago and found it very pleasant. There was a big bluebell wood at the end of the lane that might have cycle tracks, but I'm not sure, not being a cyclist. All very clean, lovely dark night skies too. http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=6108
Near Newton Stewart, should have said.
------------- Always edited for sloppy typing - when I spot it!
There's a site right in Dalbeattie (not been to it) and one just outside town that has decent reviews.
Look for sites near Mabie Forest SW of Dumfries. Or near Kirroughtry (E of Newton Stewart). More info of mountain biking etc on the Forestry website,
I suggest you use the UKCS map search & read the first couple of reviews for sites in the right place. There aren't any sites right in forestry as such, but most sites are delightful & quiet, with cycling not far away.
For one single recommendation, check out Solway View SW of Kirkcudbright. But I've not find a dud site in D&G yet.

Thx all. We booked Balloch O' Dee for 5 nights & we're really looking forward to going.
You will love Balloch o Dee, it was my first ever camping trip last year and it hooked me. Its such a great atmosphere, James the owner is lovely and helpful however my favourite thing is the farm dog Lulu, she can smell when you are cooking and comes and sits with you in the hope of some scraps and she also likes to go walks with anyone who leaves the campsite, she walked around a mile along the road and back with us!
My kids loved it, the fact that it is on a working farm and they could help with the horses, feed the chickens and even lift the eggs! Hoping to get back for the May weekend myself! Cant wait to watch the stars round the campfire with a glass of wine, because it is a dark sky area the sky at night is amazing. Enjoy!
------------- New to the Camping Game but loving it!
OP has booked already.
Not a fan of Brighouse Bay myself, but it seems to suit families. We much prefer nearby Solway View at Ross Bay: better location, small farm site - give it a go some time, Phishing!
