Hi there from Germany! We would like to travel to Scotland with our small caravan. Is it advisable to stay in a place (like Inverness) and then sightsee per day trip, or should we pick a beautiful spot (like the Isle of Skye). I'm impressed by the distances and zickzacking valleys!
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Hello Rolf. I live about an hour north of Inverness - more or less central for the NC500. You could base yourself in Inverness - and from there you have Aviemore area to visit.[one day] A good run is to take in A9 south from inverness head for Newtonmore - then take the A86 to Spean Bridge- then back to Inverness on A82 with views to Lochness. That is a day out- gives you an idea of distance/time. Skye - to and from there - you have a few routes to take in - all the area is very nice. Take note the roads round Skye in July and August will be busy. Also if you are going to Skye book your caravan site - last summer the whole island was full up with campers/motor homes and caravans.
Prepare for rain and for midges - check out on google what is best for you in terms of wipes/spray. Enjoy
Don't underestimate the times/distances you can travel far north highlands- with a caravan average will be circa 60 Kms per hour indeed sometimes a lot less
Rolf, I live 100 kms directly east of Inverness, but I would not go to Inverness or Skye. Like Germany, Scotland has many different areas and it depends what you would like to see. The west is very beautiful, but very crowded and is much wetter than the east. It also has a lot more midgies. The east is much more gentle and quiet, but has some great beaches, castles and LOTS of whisky distilleries!
Instead of Inverness, I would recommend staying in Grantown on Spey. The Spey valley is the heart of the Scottish Whisky industry.
Many years ago I lived in Germany and I love visiting the Rhine / Mosel / Saar valleys.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
Rolf. "NC500" is North Coast 500 - 500 miles (800 km), a circuit from Inverness west to Ullapool, then up to the North coast though the beautiful GeoPark, then down the east coast back to Inverness. It has its own website. It took us about a week to do.
You can't drive it in one day from Inverness but there are enough camp sites. You do need to drive some sections very carefully because many of the roads are single track - effectively one way with passing places. But the GeoPark has fabulous mountains and is every bit as beautiful as Skye, the north coast is dramatic (Castle of May is worth visiting) and the east coast has beautiful beaches (and Dunrobin Castle).
If you have time, head east then from Inverness then cut back to the main A9 taking in some distilleries (but not driving unless you don't swallow the whisky).
If you let us know how much time you have, we might be able to help more. You'll have to add the time to drive from your ferry port.
