Yes, the law is different up here but wild camping (strictly speaking) is non-motorised: you arrive on foot or bike & stay just a few days. That said, with discretion & responsible behaviour, a small tent is well tolerated especially in areas where people go hill walking.
I agree with Fiona but would add that this mostly only works if you are pitching a small tent above 1500 feet, where there are no houses, farms etc. In any case you have the advantage of being a foreigner and can claim ignorance if challenged.You could for example park a car in a suburban street in a town like Keswick and set out on foot with a small one or 2 man tent. Personally I would prefer to stay in youth hostels, as you don't have to carry as much gear then and foul weather affects you less. You can do a 5 day circular walk, visiting 5 hostels and leave your car at the first hostel.
