Hi,
I am single but with a four man tent for the living space and a small car.Is it true to say it is worth studying pitch prices closely since they can vary a lot(50%) within an area or are they more or less similar for the same facilities?,
Peter

They can vary a lot. Are you a member of the Camping and Caravanning Club? it may be well worth you joining, then you can use their Certified Sites (CSs), use the filters on here or on the Club website to find which sites have loos and showers, not all sites have them. You will pay less than £20 per night, sometimes a lot less.

Pitch prices can vary immensely and they seem to have no bearing on the facilities provided. It is down to the individual campsite what they charge for and how much they charge.

The usual advice is if it costs more than you want to pay look elsewhere because you will probably find something cheaper.

In my case I decide where I want to visit and then find a campsite as close as possible from the search map here. I check their tariff on their website. If it costs too much I try the next site until I find one more suitable. Over the years I have developed a list of the campsites I can afford in the areas I want to visit but sadly many campsites I used to go to have now priced me out so I can't visit those areas any more.

Joining a club may or may not help. I once joined the C&CC but with the membership fee and the limited number of club sites in or close to the places I wanted to visit, it ended up more expensive in the long run.

Definitely pays to check, as there can be a BIG variation.

Singletons would prefer to be charged per person (Obvs!). Families prefer an all inclusive pitch price (Obvs!) A couple in a 4 berth tent would prefer to be paying less than that family of 6 in a ten-man monster tent on the next pitch!
Wherever the site, it's true they can't please all of the people, all of the time.

Some will offer free showers, some are on meters.
Some sites include the likes of fridges and freezers, and occasionally laundry facilities and/or a "campers kitchen".

Some charge for children/more than 2 adults/dogs/gazebos/utility tents/second cars/awnings on caravans.
I seriously doubt there are two sites in the whole country with identical tariffs!
Some charge for EHU (included in pitch price) whether you want it or not.

As Bob says... check out the sites, add up all the bits that apply to you, and see if the total is suitable, or continue your search.

Best o' luck.

As a lone camper usually, with a 3-man tunnel tent, I much prefer sites charging per person - but that doesn't suit my daughter, son-in-law, two grandsons and dog! I have just paid £8 per night; hook-up would have cost £5 a night on top of that. To be honest, though, as it's a holiday break I'd be happy to pay that to be able to have handy kettle, toaster, light, heater etc particularly early and late in the year. I tend to avoid sites that charge for a pitch to include two adults, car etc, as that works out a bit pricey.

When I had a family all at home, which is a long while ago now, I used to like the way sites charged back then. All the sites we went on charged for a pitch, and what you put on it, and how many people was up to you. The only extra was electricity, but few sites had more than about 5 electric pitches back then. If this hadn't been the case, with 5 of us and two dogs, we would probably have never had a caravan or holidays.

These days no two sites are the same, and it is well worth checking. Some charge per person, some charge extra for more than two people, some charge for dogs and some don't.

Best Regards,
Colin

Mucker and Bob have described the situation exactly! Of course, sites can charge what they like and the law of supply and demand come into it.

I'm also a solo tenter with a car and a very limited budget. With a load of other commitments, I usually only get away for weekends, often with friends when we go to be safety marshals on rallies. This can be curtailing if the only suitable site is one of those that is EHU included (I don't use electricity on pitch) or doesn't give a small discount to solo campers when the pitch price includes two adults and a car.

It's a pretty poor look-out if four friends can hire a static for three nights for £13.75 ppn when a tent pitch with car on the same site when the pitch price was £15 (£3 more for EHU on top of that). Okay, I know it's not camping, but if you're tight for money, it's pause for thought!
