We are heading from Durham to Inverness in July. Looking for somewhere to stop overnight just north of Perth Lay-by etc. Does anyone know of any good places?
Thanks in advance.

A layby on the A9 would not be a fun place to spend the night, and once you are past Perth, it is only a couple of hours to Inverness; surely better to press on?

I’ve seen folk overnighting in house of bruar Car park, 30 mins north of Perth. Might be ok if you buy their food? They do fab fish and chips takeaway. It’s on the A9.
There is also the Faskally site at pitlochry.
People don’t normally use the lay-bys on the A9, as mentioned it’s really not a good idea.
At dunked , just past really there is a place called the hermitage. On the left just off the A9. There is a car park there too, it’s nice and I’ve seen folk in there overnight too
At the Perthshire visitor centre, just a few miles north of Perth on the A9 , you can’t miss it, it’s on the left. There is a large overflow car park usually used by motorhomes etc, you might be able to overnight there , again if you maybe buy their food? Good for breakfast.

House of Bruar is a place that makes me shudder every time I drive past it! Also, I've read online that the toilets are absolutely disgusting.
South Inch car park in Perth. I often see motorhomes parked overnight. There is loads of room and it's free between 6pm and 8am. There are public toilets on site a river view and it's a 5 minute walk to the city centre.

Unless you're starting late, it should only take around 6-7 hours from Durham to Inverness, so you may consider it without a stop over. Otherwise, there are several sites round Blair Atholl or Pitlochry.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

The toilets have been absolutely fine every time I've stopped there, the ones by the food hall anyway. The car park also has a handy grassy area by a burn for giving the dog a comfort break, at the farthest away end.
As others have said, a layby on the A9 itself would be a bad idea, but some segments of "the old road" are still in place, roughly parallel, and obvious on a map. Getting on & off it isn't always straightforward.
There's a couple of good laybys on the old road between Blair Atholl and Bruar, I believe. Also, on the A86 south of Newtonmore, but they would have to turn off at Dalwhinnie. But that is getting a bit close to Inverness - barely an hour from there!
