Heading there for about 10 days in early September. North and south Uist for about 5 days, then ferry over to Lewis and Harris for about 5 days. I have been looking at campsite search for best places to go with campervan and awning plus 2 dogs . Who has been and what ate your personal faves?
Looking to be based by stunning beaches.
Do you think it’s necessary to book at this time of year? What’s it like motoring about?
Amy other tips welcomed
Thanks

Yes, I reckon you'll need to book if you want to be sure. Since RET slashed the ferry fares, the MHs numbers have increased. I have work colleagues muttering about there being a MH parked up on every headland, guess you could do the same responsibly for a night here & there if needs be.
I'm assuming the roads will be similar to parts of Mull, east Kintyre or the more remote parts of the NC500. You'll be familiar with single track roads, it's the folk who aren't used to them that cause problems.
Thanks Fiona , yeah I’m ok with the roads. I had looked at booking a few nights here and there but when I’ve been reading some of the stopover places are not bookable, and are beside the best beaches. Ferries are booked and we will go from uig in Skye. Have used the site at UIG before. Plan on taking a week to get to Skye though.....no rush.
Have a look at the North Harris Trust website. There is a page with advice for campervans visiting Harris that covers some of Lewis as well. I haven't camped there for many years, but visit Lewis and Harris three times a year.
On a day trip to Harris last year we noticed a number of laybys that campervans can use for a night with a telephone number to arrange payment, about £5 a night. The site at Horgabost is my favourite and right on the beach. There are a couple of sites in Uig in Lewis that are on the machair. There were also campervans parked in the car park at Luskentyre. Facilities such as hook ups aren't plentiful, but there are a number of charging points in the Islands.
Main roads in Lewis and Harris are generally fine. Enjoy your trip.

Horgabost is a great campsite on Harris, halfway between leverburgh and Tarbet. It has a great beach, showers and kitchen room. There are no electric hook-ups, and chemical toilet disposal is at Tarbet. You can park a van in the car park or on the grounds behind the carpark. Tents can go onto the machair overlooking the beach. It can get a bit windy in September ! Horgabost is run on an honesty basis but the caretaker stops by most days to collect and clean. Be warned - everywhere is shut on a Sunday, so if you are there for a Sunday, be well stocked up ! Motoring around - on Harris a lot of roads are single track, so lots of pulling over, but the main road from north to south is generally dual carriageway. Enjoy - I really liked it there and am planning on doing the Southern Hebrides next (via Oban for Barra - South Uist - Benbecula - North Uist)
Thanks for all the tips! I’ve looked at horgabost too, think we will definitely give it a go once we leave North Uist. After some recommendations we are gong to Balranald campsite when we first arrive for few days then up to Lewis and Harris .

Horgabost was ok but quite busy i much preferred reef beach on lewis amazing beach location and good side of island for exploring. The site is sometimes called cnip grazing also. You can phone in advance to book. On north uist we liked moorcroft holidays good central location for touring and lovely facilities very friendly site. It has a little more shelter from the wind than other sites an is also close to the islands only pub which you mist visit but book first if you want to eat!
