Hi all,

I'm about to take the plunge and buy a caravan with the intent to have plenty of weekends away with the family and then venture further a field to Devon and Cornwall for summer holidays.

Its been a few years since the family has managed to visit that area but from what I remember there are a lot of small, tight roads and plenty of hills.

Is that area a nightmare for towing caravans especially for beginners ?

Does anyone have any tips or knowledge to share ?

Thank you.

Your memory is correct , so choose sites close to the M5 toExeter and the A30 beyond, park up and explore from there and you will be OK.

Yes you are right to be so cautious, I wish a few more were like you, but with careful planning, you will be fine.

Tens of thousands bring their vans down here, seems like millions sometimes, but very few have an issue........Just plan.

Good luck. 👍😀

Best way is to pick a site and follow the site's directions not your sat nav. They mostly all have a way in for caravans but it may not be the most direct.

My husband and I have just come back from a Motorhome tour of Cornwall (our third year in a row). We don't own a Motorhome and hire one locally to where we live.

We've actually always found it to be OK especially considering we only drive a vehicle like a motorhome once a year however there are some definite do's and don't's.

I always read the information on the site I am visiting. 9 times out of 10 it will say DO NOT FOLLOW SATNAV !!! They say this for a reason not just to make your journey longer. Always, always take note of what the site say.

I copy the notes to a print out and have them to hand so we know exactly what we are doing.

If I do resort to SATNAV I use the CoPilot App I have for my phone. A great App that allows you to set your vehicle type so we set it to Caravan as this give more realistic travel times.

Take a decent map with you and use it. Stick to A roads if possible...don't be tempted by the little B road or non-classified road that looks to be a shorter route.

Take note of the arrival times of the sites. Again, the sites often put a decent gap in between departure and arrival to ensure those with tight entrances leave enough of a time gap so units aren't meeting each other.

We tend to be the ones to always give way - if it's a tight road and you see someone coming and there is a passing pace right there...stop and wait. Better than risking no passing place and having to reverse. If it's really tight we stop and let the other car come by us.

The other thing to note is petrol stations aren't at every corner in Devon and Cornwall so don't leave your fuel to go too low. Keep it topped up. I also did a search on Supermarkets with petrol stations for our trip so we knew where we could get a bit of shopping and also fill up at the same time.

Most of this is common sense. At the end of the day...don't be in a rush and enjoy your drive !!!!

We picked a site in Cornwall then looked at google street view at the roads that came off the A road towards the site to see what they were like. The caravan site reviews on this site are useful as they often give you information about the best routes to them.
