It's been interesting to read these posts. I'm going camping for the first time in 20 years within the next month. The whole time I've been planning it, buying a tent, etc, I've always factored in taking my lurcher with me.
I'm planning to do my camping within school terms, during the week when the campsites should hopefully be quieter. I want him with me for a few reasons. I'm camping solo, and he does make me feel more secure, he's toasty warm at night when it gets cold, he's a reason to get up and go for a nice long walk, and he gives me a good excuse to be anti-social.
After reading a lot about camping with dogs on these forums, I've bought two tethers, and I'll string them together and thread his lead onto them. I'm planning on putting up a tarp, as I've just got a 3 person pop up, to shelter from the rain. And I've just bought a dog tent for the daytime so he doesn't get too much muck in the tent.
He will be on the lead or tether at all times, not just because of other people, but because I don't want him running off and getting run over! He means far too much to me to take that risk. He can also be quite nervy/aggressive with some dogs, due to being mauled by two dogs last year.
I agree that people should keep better control of their children. We used to have deerhounds (big dogs, about hip high), who were very friendly and laid back. Even so, I hated people assuming their children could just come up and fuss and/or grab them. If they were startled, they could have done a lot of damage just by falling on the child. As for when other people told me their dogs were friendly? So were mine, but they also weighed nearly 8 stone each, and can hit nearly 30mph. Not good.
To be honest, I think some of the littler dogs are more aggressive, it's just under reported as their bites aren't quite as debilitating as those of bigger dogs. You often find owners that don't bother training them as they don't think they can be dangerous. Behaviour that is seen as 'cute' in a chihuahua is 'dangerous' in a rottweiler.

Had a lovely 5 days in Becks Bay. Buddy loved it too. I took a Khyam K9 for him to chill out in during the day, but I ended up using it for storage, as he preferred my bed!
Tethered him as planned, and he was as good as gold (after the initial "where the hell am I?" reaction).
He did try and have a sniff and a stand off with the bloodhound mix next door, but they both quickly settled down when they found they couldn't get near each other.
Did have one couple pitch up next to me with a young chocolate lab. I did mention that Buddy was somewhat anti-social, especially with nosy pups, but the bleeding male owner just didn't seem to get it. If I'm going past another dog, I shorten the lead and try and give them a wide berth, this guy just let his dog fly around like a kite on the end of the lead. EVERY time he walked past, the lab would stick his nose round the corner of my windbreak, and every time my lurcher would fly off the bed to woof at him. I felt the same way about the owner, honestly. I don't mind people most of the time, but this guy did not take a hint and bugger off. Insisted on standing there with his dog, telling me all about the area (my gran lived the next site down), when the roads were closing for Ironman (2 days AFTER he said). Frankly, I felt like barking at him!
Other dogs n site though? No problem at all. I think the owner influences the dog a lot of the time.

Hi, I did a review of Becks Bay a couple of days ago (finally), it's up now. A was a lovely camp, a bit rustic and basic, if you like electricity, wi-fi and toilet blocks you could eat your dinner in, but very nice. Quite a few other dogs there, and just a field away from the Pembrokeshire coastal path. Apparently next year they will have 4 toilets and an extra shower. You can cross the road and walk through the field to the farm shop. They have benches outside if you'd like to take the four legged family.
A lot of the shops, like saltrock, and Denby market allow dogs, so does Feccis fish and chip shop, and the Lydstep Tavern.
The only downside of taking Buddy is that he took up most of my boot. I have a piece of foam cut to fit my boot as a bed for him, and I got some collapsible items under that, but the rest of my car was packed! On the other hand, I know now what I don't need to take, as well as things I should have taken, but didn't. The tether I bought was excellent. I went for the more expensive version, that I can't remember the name of, but it has a no tangle cable, with a straight spike with fins that you pushed into the ground. The people next door had a screw in tether, which kept working loose, but at the end of the week I had to work mine out with a mallet/peg puller. Just have to teach the dog how not to tangle himself up in the guy ropes!
