Good evening, I am planning to take my 6 year old son backpacking- just for 1 night as a trial. We camp alot as a family but i thought he may enjoy this new experience of minimalist camping. As its a trial run, I want to camp as close to ambleside town centre as possible. We will be travelling to ambleside on the 555 bus which follows the A591. I was hoping someone may have knowledge of a campsite near ambleside, thats not too far from the main road where the bus will drop us. We're used to walking so could manage a mile or so from the road to campsite if required.
Any advice appreciated :)
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
I've found there's not much choice of campsites off the main A591 at Ambleside. Or even anywhere near Ambleside to be honest .
Possibly the nearest is Rydal Hall. Or maybe YHA Windermere. I've stayed at neither so can't comment on facilities, etc.
If you want a proper "backpacking camping" experience though, catch the 516 Ambleside to Dungeon Ghyll bus for a 20 minute bus ride and stay at Baysbrown Farm in Chapel Stile. I'm pretty sure the bus stops outside the farm entrance and it's about half a mile from there to the farmhouse (to check in) and you have your pick of any of the fields you walk past on the way. Basic facilities of toilet, showers and pot wash area (all well looked after/clean). Village shop and a pub in Chapel Stile.
